Is it seriously that hard to draw from the 40 plus years of members to fill out a team that they have to rely on Spider-Man and Squirrell Girl?^^^
Arguably it's the presence of wolverine and spiderman that allows a diverse team like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Strange, wong, mockingbird, iron fist, squirrel girl and Victoria hand to succeed in this difficult marketplace. If they had launched this book with that cast of characters, without Spidey and Wolverine and called them Heroes For Hire (which they have done quite a few times), it would have sunk down the sales charts like a rock and been cancelled. How many times are they going to relaunch Outsiders and have it canceled before they realize sales are better with Batman?
Instead... +spiderman+wolverine=new Avengers=$$$, and voila, you have Luke Cage and Squirrel Girl suddenly becoming fan favorite characters clawing their way up from the D-list by the clawed webbed bootstraps.
Squirrel girl ever gets to pwn Wolverine in a brawl and then fight giant nazi robots while defending the cage-jones baby in a solo issue. In the top ten sales list as well... Not going to happen if they had called that issue Fear Itself Squirrel Girl #1.Leave a comment:

Love that cover! Bill Sienkiewicz is my fav artist.
I don't mind who is in the Advengers. Its the story that counts and they have been pretty good the past few years.Last edited by stevenlore; Oct 23, '11, 4:54 PM.Leave a comment:

They had him on the team in the last relaunch, and then they go and take him out again.

I'm not continuity obsessed, haven't followed much at Marvel to be that way. Spider-Man just doesn't belong on all these teams, and Wolverine should only be begrudgingly playing along with the X-Men related stuff. I just find it to be a waste of a slot in the team that could be taken up by a different character and provide a more diverse group of characters instead of more of the same. It would be like Superman being a member of the JLA, Teen Titans, Outsiders, Doom Patrol, etc all at the same time. But that is more the issue of the continuity obsessed grown up fan-man who can't simply choose to ignore the multiple appearances and pick and choose the ones he likes.
As kids It's not like we ever wondered how Superman had time to hang out with the justice league, batman in world's finest, random guest stars in DC comics presents, and multiple titles and guest appearances in other titles.
Even before joining FF and the Avengers, Spiderman had up to five or six titles a month. If they shift it over to a couple of team books, there isn't really much harm. For the continuity obsessed, more often than not they actually do address those issues and you can draw a through line within the titles and multiple appearances. Particularly during the crossovers.
There was a recent issue of Wolverine that followed him through the course of a week in all the globetrotting team adventures which just showed how insane his life was... And it actually worked within the context of a character that cannot sit still and js obsessed to the point of burnout and exhaustion.
Spiderman's been shown as well recently to leave in the middle of adventures... He recently had an issue of New Avengers where he told them he was taking off to hang out with the FF, at the same time that The Thing was taking a bit of time off from the stresses going on with the FF and spending his time with the New Avengers instead. Even during Fear Itself, Spiderman felt a bit out if his element and took off because he needed to deal with his family stuff. But that has always been Peter Parker hasn't it? Over committed because of his sense of responsibility and at the end of the day that sense if overarching responsibility that tends to be the big let down with his friends and family.
Sure these multiple appearances are all about the $$$, but think some of the writers have managed to tap into that feeling that many if us feel in contemporary society where all our obligations tend to pull us in a hundred directions at once. It's pretty relatable stuff.Leave a comment:

I can see Super Goof as an Avenger.Leave a comment:

The latest incarnation of the Defenders launching out of Fear itself. Sure to drive many here nuts because Strange and Iron Fist are also on the New Avengers, Namor is also in the X-men blue team, and Silver Surfer is in the Annihilators or Guardians of the Galaxy or whatever the cosmic team book is called right now. I wouldn't be surprised if Red She Hulk was on one of the Avenger Teams as well.

I just read the TowMorrows book on Kevin Maguire last night and it had that cover. I'll have to grab that book(series) with him on art. I never really read Defenders at any point, so I'm not a fan. I do think a revival of sorts with the right creative team could do well, though.Leave a comment:

Personally, I think the next Avenger should be Howard the Duck. Or maybe, since Disney now owns Marvel, they could start bringing in some other famous names as Avengers---Mickey, Goofy, Donald.....
OF course, I hope you all know I'm just being a smart@$$!!!Leave a comment:

They weren't XMEN Defenders and Champions all at the same time. That's what's bugging most here, its fine if they left one group to go to another. But its a bit ridiculous when Woverine is an Avenger and XMan at the same time along with multiple solo titles. Not to mention Beast, Angel and Iceman were the New Defenders. A hugely under rated oddball run that they just solicited in a collected edition.
Angel and Iceman were also Champions.
Plus Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch... Brotherhood of evil mutants.

Is that Avengers now? Hawkeye looks like the Golden Age Green Arrow, only in purple.http://i.newsarama.com/images/AVN2010019_cov.jpg
Do they need 2 Spider-people on the same team?
And I see they're changing Hawkeye's costume to bring him more in line with the movie version.....Ugh!Leave a comment:
