If you like the 80's incarnations of Marvel heroes you would likely agree with the Fantastic Four and Herbie. The Torch was replaced at that point because censors felt kids might actually set themselves ablaze if they watched him. Forget they already knew about him from the comics.

^Or the fact he was already in a cartoon series in the '60s.

That's a big bogus urban myth. They couldn't use the Torch due to the fact that Universal had the tv rights tied up on him while they were doing the TV shows like the Hulk and Spidey.

Yeah, it's one of those urban myths that refuses to go away.

I didn't mind the 70s FF cartoon, but it would have been so much better with the Torch in it.
Cute robots of course sprang up in everything post Star Wars.

Did anyone watch that Hanna Barbera "Thing" cartoon where a kid puts two rings together and becomes The Thing?
            "Thing ring, do your thing!"

A young "Benjy Grimm" who becomes The Thing at will with the aid of his magic rings.
            Yeah, okay.
Even as a kid I wondered why they were screwing so much with the character.

Well if you read the article it's pretty obvious that NBC wasn't revealing this licensing problem at the time. Hence the rationale for why they're PR dept started the "urban myth". No company comes forward and states licensing issues like this when their trying to promote product. So while this may be the REAL reason, it was not what they promoted at that time. I was a kid in middle school and this was all the talk because that is how they explained it back then. That is why the myth doesn't go away. Because that's the memory kids have about the show and what was said back then. Blame NBC, not me.

Probably one of the worst portrayals of a Marvel hero ever put to the small screen. Horrible. I was so embarrassed when I saw this back then.

i have always heard that torch wasnt on it because of censors to. It probably wouldnt be to far fetched though because of how those parents groups were in the late sixties to early eighties. Remember, Popeye couldnt actually smoke a pipe! I think thats also the original reason space ghost, birdman, etc went off the air to..

I remember seeing ads in Marvel Comics of the time for "Fred and Barney Meet The Thing", but I somehow missed the cartoon. Flash forward 20 years, and I finally catch a cartoon in between shows on Boomerang. The pits of super hero animation.

Someone was doing some serious acid on those later ones. The Orgin of Spider-Man is still my favorite version of the story however. Very faithful to the original comic.

I always loved the Bakshi Spiderman series. I particularly remember one acid-drenched episode where underground dwellers are making buildings disappear, so Spidey ends up swinging around underground in front of purple and orange trippy backgrounds.
I really enjoyed it when The Rhino stole all this gold and ends up making a life size statue of himself.... in solid gold. Always thought that was a cool idea!
