Just to bring this back to the discussion at hand... If we are talking about the primary architects of the Ultimates comics here, these guys are on the front lines of creating popular new superhero comics.
Mark miller had the number one graphic novel last year... kick ***. Not to mention Wanted, Superior, Supercrooks and the upcoming Hitgirl.
Bendis has Powers of course. Plus a couple of creator owned titles just coming out... One in collaboration with Mark bagley.
Jonathon Hickman has a half dozen indie creator owned titles everyone should be checking out. Including red mass of mars and the nightly news.
These are all some of the best titles published currently IMHO.
My point? Why don't these guys take their diversity chances with their OWN characters, create something new and really reflective of the world and experience they claim to want to show in their work, be the Lee, Kirby, O'Neil, Siegel, Kane, or whatever and create the next Batman or Spider-Man who'll end up on kids' pajamas and as action figures and Halloween costumes? Even Todd MacFarlane was able to do that with Spawn, for a while.
I tend to agree with some of the others here that changes like the ones upcoming in Ultimate Spider-Man are mostly about geting attention and publicity and appearing more cool and worldly as writers than actually creating comics with more diverse leads -- as their own works attest.Comment

I liked the female Spiderman Clone. If it had been her, I probably would have been interested in picking up the book.Last edited by The Bat; Aug 3, '11, 5:07 PM.sigpicComment

Don't give them any ideas!
The only problem I ever have with minority characters in comics is that they remind me of another pet peeve of mine: white guys talking jive whenever they converse with a black person. They get overwhelmed addressing the modifier, rather than the person. It seems comic writers also often forget basic things about people when they're writing characters whom might be different than themselves--how many times does Nightcrawler (or any foreign character, f.ex.) speak fluent English for an entire sentence; yet, has to slip into their mother tongue for a simple word like the or friend? I fully expect this new guy to be Peter Parker with dark skin and an early 1990s rap vocabulary sprinkled judiciously throughout his speech, because that's how comic writers deliver. Half-arsed.
But it's cool--whatever they do is fine with me, because they've taught me not to expect much from them.Comment

I'vw actually enjoyed "Ultimate Fallout" but this is ridiculous. Bottom there are some heroes who there is only one person can be. The only Spider-Man in any universe should be Peter Parker. As far as redoing things it's OK if done right..see the early issues of the original Ultimate Spider_man.Comment

Creators won't "create" new characters for DC or Marvel because they can't own them. They get participation in their profits, but that's it. So if someone comes up with the redneck version of Shang-Chi, they get participation for it. And they don't have to give away their best ideas to Marvel and DC. They can create brand new characters that they own lock stock and barrel and take them pretty much anywhere else.

How many independents in the '80s and '90s have scored big..?? Judge Dredd, Turtles, I can't name them all.. Again, my earlier point is, 'Create Demand'..
Tough to do..?? You betcha.
But, me thinks I protest too much..: I'm just bantering here. I wouldn't go near today's comics with a yardstick anyways, so what does it matter..? My love is to comics from Silver/Bronze Ages..
As David Tennant said to Peter Davison in 'Timecrash'.., "Give all my love to long ago.."Peace.. Through Superior Firepower.

A quick check of a couple of comic news sites is helping prove my concerns of this whole thing smelling of senstationalism and race baiting to drum up hype for the event and now hits for these comic news sites as well. I'm seeing articles with oh so creative and original titles like "Fear of a black Spider-Man" and "Fear of a black Perry White." They are trying to bait people and bring out the worst of them. They are trying to stir up crap.
Insincere and hypoctritical corporate playing of people against each other at its finest. I guess it is sort of brilliant in its own condecending and expoiltive way. And corporate laughs at us all the way to the bank.
Personally, I can understand Spidey fans being ticked Peter was murdered and replaced. I was royal ticked off when Wonder Woman was replaced by a blond and for the record, no, I don't hate blond women. You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...Comment

I'm not happy with the lament that you need to change the race of a hero like Spidey to make it more 'relative' or entertaining. As mentioned, that's actually racist, that 'certain races' won't relate or buy the comic due to the race of the character. That disturbs me the most.
.
But that's kind of the point here as well. It's the relative ages of the audience that is commenting here, vs perhaps the hope of a younger demographic. It's a fact that kids are very self centered and do learn to relate over time with others outside of their experience.
If a kid who is Hispanic or black from a single parent family, happens to come across this comic (which isn't likely because of the sell out), and finds that they can relate to the character and is inspired by the character of Miles Morales, I honestly don't see how that can be viewed as a negative by everyone here. Particularly since the way the modern marketing machine works,,, Spiderman is pretty omnipresent in the world. How does that take away anything from Peter Parker?Comment

And it's not like Marvel isn't involved in this process. If we are going to use the Kirby argument... Under work for hire Marvel is the creator of the new Spider-man. And Marvel is a huge corporate conglomerate with multiple shared universes. That already has a previous example of a Hispanic future Spiderman... And that character's ethnicity really has nothing to do with copyright.Comment

Spidey of India and Japan exist because they are different cultures with different languages, reading styles, etc... Every main comic character that goes to India or Japan is culturally translated so it makes sense to that country. It happens in most non-English countries.
As for 2099 and Spider-Girl, it's called trademarks. Do you remember in the 90's when Marvel did that alternate X-reality which replaced the normal titles? That was all trademark driven. 2099 was supposed to be Ultimates before Ultimates. This tactic has been apart of the comic world since the golden age.
.
The ethnicity of Spiderman 2099 has nothing to do with trademark. The point was... Already precedence for an alt universe Spiderman that exists in one monthly title quite nicely alongside the dozens of comics that featured Peter Parker. What is the difference here?
And if anyone is already missing Teen Spiderman... I have no doubt that there will be any number of new titles with teen Parker out in time for the new movieComment
