John Byrne's thoughts on this.
Byrne Robotics: New Spider-Man Marvel Movie Rights
"More creative bankruptcy. Remember the Black Panther? Remember Luke Cage?
Somewhere along the line -- and, sadly, it's not recent -- Black characters at Marvel suddenly were only allowed if they adopted the names of existing characters. Iron Man. Captain Marvel. Giant-Man (who'd begun with the staggeringly original name "Black Goliath"). Nick Fury. Now, a Black Spider-Man.
I'll admit to having created only a handful of Black characters, but at least NONE of them were forced to follow in some White guy's footsteps.
Aren't Black audiences weary yet of this modern-day Minstrel Show? "You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...Comment

I've also followed the entire run, and if you are a fan of Bendis' run, you know he's not going to be phoning this one in either.
Just as Jay Garrick was eventually replaced by Barry Allan who was eventually replaced by Wally West and then replaced by Bart Allan only to be replaced by Barry again...
Peter Parker passes the torch in an alternate universe version... just like Spider-girl took over for her father in M2, Migquel O'Hara takes over in 2099 etc.
As you can see by all those titles Peter Parker appears in July... he ultimately doesn't go anywhere. He's in like 20 different titles. A movie franchise. Video Games. Animated series. etc etc.
The funeral issue of Ultimate Fallout was one of the most character oriented "death" stunts I've ever seen that really does create some interesting story opportunities. Sure it's a Stunt, but they honestly have the creative team in place to pull it off.
If you don't buy into the hype, then don't buy in. Joining into the cacophony of people who weren't going to give the book a shot no matter what anyways just gives it the publicity that they intended.
I've got all the Ultimate issues and enjoy them... I'll continue. And if this gives it a boost in new readership that wasn't going to pick up the old title in the first place or wanders into a comic shop to find it.
This is not a BAD thing. Readership is readership. The more diverse comics fans the better.Comment

Wrong again!I guess you weren't listening to me.
I had said that I'd started buying it again with the "Death of Spiderman"...and had added the title "Ultimate Fallout:Spiderman No More".
But knowing what a CRAP turn the book is about take...I'll be cancelling it tomorrow.sigpicComment

Peter Parker is Spider-Man.
Spider-Man is Peter Parker.
Accept No Imitations!
(And don't fall for the old Jedi mind trick)
Love the approach though: Sales in massive decline, what to do, what to do...I got it! Kill the guy, and replace him with another guy...yeah, that's the ticket!
Whatever they're ingesting over yonder in Marvel's "Ultimate" Universe....KEEP IT AWAY FROM THE CHILDREN!!!Comment

This will likely kill the title as The Clone Saga almost did for the regular title all those years ago. People vote on this with their purchases or by not purchasing. If the readership drops and the sales drop the people have spoken and the title will fold. All indications are that is going to happen, in that order as simple as A, B & C.
Even you called it a stunt and tried to spin it as a positive thing. You can't make it a positive thing. It doesn't matter if Peter Parker is still appearing so many titles other than this. It's a sales gimmick. The people here commenting on this know it, John Byrne knows it and it is going to fail. It lacks creativity and originality. Then for their next trick I bet Marvel plagiarize's Straczynski's Brand New Day story to put Ultimate Peter back in place by having new Ultimate Spidey striking a deal w/Mephisto because the House of Idears is, well, out of ideas.Comment

Samurai - the problem isn't that he's "not white", it's the reasoning behind the decision. Bendis admits Glover was the motivation and not some creative spark.
Ultimate Spidey isn't just black. He's black and hispanic and apparently biracial and comes form a broken home, etc..etc...
It's worse than PC, it's social advocacy. Marvel has been trending this path since Civil War and when it bombs Bendis will blame bigotry instead of admitting it was blatant pandering.
Then again, Bendis has been overrated since Powers.Comment

You're not moved in the slightest by the funeral scenes in Ultimate Fallout?Last edited by samurainoir; Aug 2, '11, 11:11 PM.Comment

Doesn't mean the storyline doesn't have substance. He wrote the heck of out Death of Spiderman and Ultimate Fallout as part of the stunt and those were incredibly moving storylines with implications for all the other characters. Anyone commenting (other than The Bat) actually reading these books?
The Green Lantern stuff with the multi coloured rings... total stunt. But cut out all those superfluous tie in books and the core Green Lantern titles were really a great ride. Good story. Good art.
Basically... what really differentiated Ultimate Peter Parker from 616 Peter Parker other than age? Why not try something different and try to reach out to a different kind of audience? How is this different than Japanese Spiderman, Spiderman India, Spiderman 2099 and Spidergirl? How is this different than killing off Earth 2 Superman? Especially when there is already a mainline Superman running around.
Comics have been pulling stunts for years and history will basically show us what sticks. Sam Jackson as Nick Fury? Immortalized in cinema. Sure that was "stunt casting", but it paid off didn't it? Ultimates was a great book and the Avengers movies are based on a large chunk of the Ultimates... to a great deal of universal acceptance.
Bottom line...
How many here are reading Amazing Spider-man every month?
How many here are reading any 616 Marvel title currently featuring Spider-man?
How many here are reading Ultimate Spider-man?
If you're in the top two, this doesn't impact your enjoyment of the characters in 616 in the slightest. If it does, you might want to question why it bothers you so much that there is an alternate universe Spider-man starring in an additional book you don't really read any ways. That goes double for those that don't buy any monthly Spider-man books at all.
As for those following Ultimate Spider-man... Peter was the middle of what was essentially an ensemble cast of really well written characters. Aunt May, J Jonah Jameson, Gwen Stacey, Mary Jane, Johnny Storm, Bobby Drake, Kitty Pryde, and the Ultimates, Ultimate X-Men and other characters all look like this is going to be a major catalyst for the upcoming relaunch. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to these characters next.
But again... who knows if this will succeed or not, but at least they are trying something different. Again, only history will be able to see this with any clarity past the reactionary noise. But we've been through this so many times already... don't you guys get tired of having the same gut reactions to things that really don't play out so badly in the end when you look back on it?
The precedence however seem to indicate that there is some chance that this might stick. I'm willing to give it a chance based on the hundred plus issues of Ultimates comics I've enjoyed much more than 616 continuity Spiderman in quite some time.Last edited by samurainoir; Aug 2, '11, 11:18 PM.Comment

In the end, I don't think the genesis of the idea is important. The real question is, "why not?"
So, why not? It's Ultimate Spider-Man. A title, and universe that was intended to be divergent/different from the standard 616. I don't see a problem with this.
It might get me to purchase an issue of USM.Comment

Nothing wrong with social advocacy as long as they are spinning entertaining and engaging stories while they are doing it right? Marvels been on top of the sales charts for the past decade and now topping the box office.Last edited by samurainoir; Aug 2, '11, 11:46 PM.Comment
