Not the same thing...as that was the fourth of the same production series...and it was just bloody awful.

    This Spidey...as you know...is a reboot.

The only way it will bomb is if it's a complete disaster...meaning...horrible production...but if it's a solid well-made movie...it will be a box office success.

I hope I am wrong, I hope it's a great movie...but I just haven't seen anything to make me believe that it will be.

My impression so far is that this film has way too many potentially damaging ingredients to succeed:

Way too soon for a reboot, casual attendees (word-of-mouth crowd) will resent the continuity deviations
B-list actors (aside from Field & Sheen...who aren't exactly box office draws these days)
      Minimally experienced motion picture director
      Bad costume
Misleading title (Amazing Spider-Man, clearly this is based on the Ultimate Spider-Man)
      Rushed production
Shot in 3D (dying art form)
Opening merely 2 weeks prior to The Dark Knight Rises

        Perhaps

B-list actors (aside from Field & Sheen...who aren't exactly box office draws these days)

When the first Spidey came out...Tobey Maguire was not exactly a household name either...same goes for James Franco...only Willem Defoe had the name (and he's not exactly box office draw either)...but basically in the same league as Field and Sheen. Also, Andrew Garfield was in the high profile Social Network movie...he's a hot commodity right now...more sought-after than Tobey Maguire at the moment. I still think Garfield's head is way too big to fit under the Spidey mask though...lol

        Minimally experienced motion picture director

        True...but you gotta start somewhere...lol

        Bad costume

Kids and the general public (meaning, non-comic book geeks) won't care...and it's a matter of personal opinion and taste...look no further than Batman's body armor (and funny deep raspy voice)...but look what happened...the general public didn't even trip on Batman's body armored costume...only the comic book geeks...lol

Misleading title (Amazing Spider-Man, clearly this is based on the Ultimate Spider-Man)

Again...the general moviegoer has no clue about this

        Rushed production

        Perhaps

Shot in 3D (dying art form)

Agreed...but you do have a choice (other non-3D screens)...I always watch them on 2D

Opening merely 2 weeks prior to The Dark Knight Rises

Good point...that's probably the biggest obstacle facing Spidey

Yeah but more people will bring their kids to Spiderman than TDKR. Especially after the Dark Knight, there were some pretty scary scenes for children(straight razor in the mouth anyone?).

I for one can't wait. I already think this one looks better than the others.

I LOVE the scenes where you are getting spidey's POV (running on the rooftoops, swinging with the web) - that hasn't been done and will be refreshing to me. And it looks better and will be better than any video game.

I really like the choice for Peter Parker. I never thought TM was all that good - he fit the role okay, but his voice and facial expressions were always "off" to me.

I am reserving FULL judgment until it releases.

I seem to remember a whole lot of people here hating on Captain America when they first released the pictures of the suit - most of us could not stand it. There weren't many in the beginning who liked it. Now...very much reversed.

Dark Knight made way to much money to dismiss it as a non-threat to the new Spidey...because it is.

Being two weeks apart...I think it's going to hurt Spidey more...because it's a reboot...and the Nolan Batman films are so established right now.

Having said that...Spidey is still going to make a lot of money...I just don't think in Dark Knight's league.

Well...having a glider run through the Green Goblin's chest was not exactly a Hallmark moment either...

I'm confused...is this the Marvel "Ultimate Spiderman" comic being done in this movie? Cause if it is I have NO desire to see it at all. It's a shame what both of the Big 2 are doing to their characters and companies...but most of all what they are doing to the older fan base. Completely distancing themselves from the older readers/collectors.
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
                        The beauty that surrounds them
                        Isn't it a pity".

I love Spidey...and growing up...I bought nothing but Spider-Man comics...it was by far...my favorite comic book...yes...even over both Batman and Superman...which I found them to be kinda predictable and boring...but not Spider-Man.

                          ...and I love both Spider-Man 1 & 2...not so much 3.

Having said that...Nolan's Batman films...are a league above the Spidey flicks...perhaps not truer than Spidey as far as following the comic books...but as stand alone films...Batman Begins & The Dark Knight are masterpieces...definitely my all time favorite comic book-based flicks after the first two Superman movies.

But the Spider 1 & 2...are right up there in third place.

                          Comic book film series:

                          1. Superman 1 & 2
                          2. Batman Begins & Dark Knight
                          3. Spider-Man 1 & 2
                          4. X-Men: First Class & X-Men 2
                          5. Iron Man & Iron Man 2

                          I have spoken!
