and guess what, I can say what I want if you can moan about everything you don't like. If I saw it and liked it, I would have the balls to say so, I just am not going to waste money on a Ryan Reynolds(if it were the same movie with anyone but Van Wilder I'd have gone) movie, just like I didn't waste money on the Christoper Reeves love letter that was Superman Returns. If the movie was about the GL I grew up on and still miss to this day, I'd be all over it. Buts its based on the modern Johns garbage that I just can't get into. Its all about personal taste and if you don't get that its not my problem. THis thread was about a sequel and I posted an opinion on it happening, then you and your pal dragged Morrison into it as a dig at me plain and simple. All you have to do is look at the numbers (66% drop in its second week) to see this movie isn't appealing to the masses like WB hoped. Maybe the GL concept is too cartoonish for non comic peeps to get into, maybe its just a bad movie, maybe its the economy, maybe its all the competition, maybe the public sees it as just another superhero movie and just doesn't care about it at this point. Who nows? As far as the GL comics go, I wish it would move on from the stoyline that has been basically around since Rebirth. Funny the only two books to survive the reboot as is are GL and Morrison's Batman storyline, guess they are the only two selling for DC.

On a different note, I see the sequel getting made, simply because I don't think they are going up to give so easily. That and knowing Sinestro will be the big bad in the next one already make sit promising. Aside from Batman and The Superman reboot, what else do they have to try? Another thing that might help if possible is NOT releasing it in the middle of so many Marvel movies coming out. Why be prone to the comparisons? How much better would this movie have done and been received if it was the only super hero movie coming out in that period of time? I wonder about that.Comment

The earthbound portions of the film are what held it back.
Warners commissioned a script for GL II last fall. While that did not mean the film would be made, this announcement makes it very likely. With the investment Warners has put into the property - the marketing, toys, the new animated series - it seems they are not ready to give up on the property just yet.
The film could nurture a fanbase on DVD and with showings on TV. This has happened with other properties.
If Warners were attempting to save face over the film, it would not announce a sequel. It would just keep quiet. There is no sense in announcing a film that's never intended to be made.
Making such a statement would seem to be the work of one wishing to provoke. May not be the case, but if it is, it's sad and pathetic.Comment

A better story would have helped Green Lantern.
There were four unresolved plot points, that, in my opinion really affected the film.
1: Hal's family. What is the point in introducing them, and never showing them again? Parallax threatened them specifically, but we never saw them after the intro.
2: What was the point of Waller's flashback? Why show it if nothing was gonna come of it?
3: wouldn't it have made sense to do a scene of Hammond, Hal, and Carol as kids if their relationship went back that far, and played such an important role in the film's climax?
4: what was the point in saving Senator Hammond?, he only died later anyway, which in my mind weakened Hal's character development, illustrating his limitations.
I know that's what they were going for, but it backfired in my opinion.
Still, it was a fun movie, but far from perfect. It definitely should have gone through some more script revisions before the cameras rolled.Last edited by B-Lister; Jun 26, '11, 10:48 PM.Looking for Green Arrow accessories, Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver, and Japanese Popy Megos (Battle Cossack and France, Battle of the Planets, Kamen Rider, Ultraman) and World Heroes figuresComment

Great news on the sequel! Personally I had no problem with the film on any level. I think movies like Lantern need to illustrate the motivation of it's characters before you get into a deep space story. Hal Jordan, in my opinion, needed the origin story developed before you could take him any further. I thought it worked great. Now that we have the foundation built, the real battle with all of the bells and whistles can come to fruition. And honestly I am not entirely surprised to hear this announcement about a sequel. Lantern didn't get made with total dependency on ticket sales. It has a boat load of merchandise and toys that are helping to cover the costs too. And as Bat mentioned, the DVD sales and post related product will also boost it's coffers. Especially when those who shied away from theaters watch it on DVD and end up LIKING it.
I laugh pretty hard when I hear critics and people who know LITTLE about the character call him a "second tier" hero. Hardly. Lantern has been (and continues to be) one of the hottest selling titles in the DC Universe. Burying both Batman and Superman alike. Warner Bros. will not bail on such a popular character that fast. The work Geoff Johns has done on this character and that universe has brought a whole dimension to that character. And those who blame Geoff Johns for this first film, apparently know nothing of his work. Johns' submission was watered down by four different studio screen writers. The studio also said it will be releasing a director's cut because there was over a half hour of footage cut from the final product. I suspect the studio will lean solely on Geoff Johns for the sequel. Plenty of reason to get excited there as well. In the end, I think the first Lantern entry will likely find it's audience on DVD. There were simply too many people, who didn't know enough about this character. And they allowed the critics, who knew even less, to tell them what to think about it. The public will get educated on the DVD edition and do what they should have always done before - Ignore the critics and pile in for the next film.Comment
