I may read those. They probably are very good. Most modern movies/TV focus on Silver/Modern age incarnations while drawing in elements from all eras. I think this was done the same way. It certainly is set pre death of superman.

As far as the new stuff being what got this movie made: I doubt it. What are monthly sales of this comic? Not enough enough to warrant a movie. GL got made because Warner and DC see there is money to be made on superheroes and they looked to the roster after Superman & Batman, looked at who they could get a license for, and considered who had a fanbase - GL has a decent fan base but he has more nonfanboy popularity from the Superfriends than any comic he has starred in. His continued sales over decades I am sure played a part too. I know 2 people who have read the current millenium GL (you and a facebook cosplay friend -I am sure thre are many more here) - I know thousands and thousands of people who know the superfriends version. I know hundreds who know the Silverage - modern age GL.

Green Lantern was pretty much a Fly on a Horses Arse Before ReBirth. And Now his Comicbook Sales have Sprung 3 Comic Monthly Titles, Soon to be 4 , Tie-in's , Yearly Events , Endless, Endless Merchandise , His Comicbook Sales Rival Batman & Superman Books and a ton of the Stories are re-printed in Trades, Hard Covers and 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Printing. His Status is Marketed as the "Big 3rd" in the DCU Comics with ads and pictures ... He's probably 1 of the Biggest Money Makers in Comics right Now .... None of this was Anywhere Before Rebirth, So I have trouble agreeing with your Statements and thoughts on the Subject.

though this may be a matter of what came first the chicken or the egg.

is it possible he is getting more exposure and merchandise as a tie in to the movie rather than getting a movie because there were comics and toys? the movie was announced 3 years ago. what GL merchandise was out before that? i know Justice League TV show and related lines stuff (mostly Stewart). I am out of the loop on comics but I just went to the DC site and can't find 3 regular series GL titles. I see a mini series and some direct movie tie ins. What are the 3? And did they come out before the movie was announced?

You're totally off the mark on this....The majority of the version of Green Lantern that the movie showcases came from the current incarnation by Geoff Johns. From Rebirth to Sinestro Corps Wars to Secret Origin (all story arcs by Johns) elements were all mined for the movie...

Hal "Highball" Jordan? Geoff Johns came up with that... Parallax as an evil yellow entity? Again Johns. Hector Hammond's interest in Carol Ferris? Johns.
Sinestro's yellow uniform? Johns. The whole concept of fear? Johns. Heck, Geoff Johns is even a producer on the film. The movie owes a hell of a lot more to his version than it does John Broome and Gil Kane's.

Before Johns' revitalized Hal Jordan as Green Lantern in "Rebirth" I wouldn't necessarily say that GL had top sales over decades. In fact, the opposite...Hal Jordan wasn't selling so they came up with Kyle Rayner. Boost in sales for awhile but then they went down so Hal was brought back as The Spectre...That failed and it eventually led to the "Rebirth" mini-series.

Since then GL has consistently been one of DC's top books along with it's spin-offs as well as the "Blackest Night" mini-series and cross-overs...all orchestrated by mythos set up by Johns.

That's why GL is the first mainstream DC hero besides Superman and Batman to be made into a franchise film...The other characters like Wonder Woman, The Flash etc. just aren't there yet as having a solid strong identity in the comics that a movie franchise can build on.

You obviously don't have the info so here ya go:

Green Lantern Rebirth debuted October 2004
Green Lantern (vol. 4) #1 debuted July 2005
Green Lantern Corps (vol. 2) #1 debuted in August 2006
              Blackest Night debuted June 2009
Green Lantern Emerald Warriors debuted October 2010

The current incarnation of the GL movie property was announced in October 2007 after a couple of aborted attempts in the 10-years prior.

So the comics were already a smash hit BEFORE the movie was announced...

BINGO!! That sums it up quite well Anthony. Another thing that bothers me is that some people are voicing there opinion on a movie they haven't seen(or plan on seeing), and haven't been following the current Green Lantern Comics(which I have been since "re-Birth").

GL is indeed doing awesome business, but there was a time when that same GL was 'a fly on a horses ***'

Oh wait, did I say 'A' time?

Make that THREE times. And I contend that since Emerald Twilight, there has not been a good story ABOUT Hal, save for Rebirth.

There have been plenty of stories WITH Hal, but very few about him.

I can name the best Hal stories on one hand. Of course the same can be said about Superman, but regardless...

I liked the film, I don't like, and will never like Hal Jordan.
Looking for Green Arrow accessories, Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver, and Japanese Popy Megos (Battle Cossack and France, Battle of the Planets, Kamen Rider, Ultraman) and World Heroes figures

Well, to be a "tool" he would either have to be "A dull, slow-witted, or socially inept person." or "a stupid, vapid, or unpleasent person." of which he is neither. You have the right to not like him, you just don't have to insult him.

Evidently Warner re-registered the website for Green Lantern 2.

                              www.comicbookmovie.com/green_lantern/news/?a=51715

Not much news... but a thread of hope for a sequel? Nah, probably not.
