Ok, Stan was an Idea man sure he was,and what he did as a pitch man for Marvel was marketing brilliance with his fancy words and Hype.

Sure I'll give him that because as a publisher and editor he had a rival in DC that if not for the hype which helps sells books no matter how well written and drawn it is. it'll sit there on the racks.

Stan was the Pied Piper of Comics during that time and made the kiddies believe that Marvel was the grooviest comics ever....

But again I understand where Sandy is coming from. As an Illustrator for over twenty years that I've been, I've met Stan Lee types. Stan is an old timer coming from the days of when the ARTIST was the hired gun, the work for hire. The you will not take credit for anything...the P on.

He says he's an Idea man......In the Jonathan ross docu In Search of Steve Ditko. Stan talks about who created Spiderman this is a small snippet you can find the whole thing on youtube

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4z7xuDhMeg

Now Stan firmly believes that the ONE who comes up with the Idea is the creator fine Ok......but see unless you put that Idea on paper and make it into a physical Idea to call your own, an Idea is all it is. I have never seen an early Stan lee spidey sketch of HIS Idea of the character. anyone have one? I'd sure like to see it if you do.........so not having that ability he hands it over to a CO-CREATOR.....but in Stan's mind in the 1960's it's an employee not a collaborator.

Now Stan having the talent that he is surrounded with, hands over the idea to Ditko,Kirby or whomever he has employed to do his will.

In Ditko's Spiderman case Stan gives him only who the character is, Leaves Steve to do the rest. Steve walks away and comes back later with one of the most ICONIC and Greatest superhero designs ever. I mean that costume design is Pure Genius.

Now Ditko's run is history and the Spidey moves next to Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman as a recognizable cash cow.

Ditko for his own reasons walks away from the series.......Stan continues to write and edit Spiderman and makes loads of money from it, but never mentions to the PUBLIC that Ditko is co-creator. Why should he? In Stan's mind in the 60's Ditko is nothing more that an employee a Dime a dozen artist at his disposal.

When I was growing up in the 70's and 80's I always thought that Stan was the sole creator. Foolish me, till I met Neal Adams and he told me no, "Steve Ditko also co-created the character". Gasp! Horrors!!! Nooooooo! Stan the man the genius? Did not create Spiderman on his own? but but what about what he said in Origin of marvel comics? WOW!! mind boggling.

when I sat with Gil Kane, Kane told me "Stan has a funny way of remembering things he did or did not do".

I find it interesting that in 1999 Stan wrote a letter to whomever for Ditko stating that he was also co-creator. I find that somewhat interesting that he would do that in 1999 when the character was created in 1962 some 37 years AFTER the cash cow was created...and just a few years before the movie would hit the big screen, and Stan sits there wondering why Ditko rejected his letter.....it doesn't take a rocket scientist much to figure that one out.

Here's where I have my problems with Stan. The fact that now when confronted with who created those characters HE first made people believe that HE was the sole creator instead of outright saying No I WAS CO-Creator.....when you see media clips you always see misinformed news people say Stan was the creator not ACCURATELY say he is CO-creator BIG DIFFERENCE.

Stan Lee as far as I know only created ONE character prior to his run in the 60's That was the minor timely character the Destroyer and even then he is co-credited.

Also again what's the most damming evidence against his "Genius" is when Kirby left, Stan ran out of Ideas and moved to Publisher. Yet couldn't find time to WRITE or create NOT one decent character since. Okay maybe he ran dry with the characters....but what about the writing??? A writer writes all the time it's what they do......all of a sudden it all disappeared?

Yep, that pretty much sums it up for me as well. I may be a bit too naive about Lee for some, but it's MY naivety and I own it.

Megospidey, palitoy, Tim.... even withOUT being a big "comic guy" as
a child, Stan Lee STILL had an impact on me... when I had him sign his bio
for me, I mentioned it's always so surreal to hear him in person (I meant
on TV interviews, docs, etc.) because I relate his voice so much to the
few Spidey Friends cartoons he narrated. Also, even if I didn't know what
he LOOKED like when I was a kid.... I sure saw his name around a lot!

              Big icon? Certainly.

I believe most of us are on the same page when it comes to Stan Lee screwing over artists in the credit department, particularly when they are the ones doing the "heavy lifting" in the Marvel "plot" style.

This Is a Plot? | Kirby Dynamics
Here is Stan Lee’s famous quote on the Kirby-Lee partnership: “Some artists, of course, need a more detailed plot than others. Some artists, such as Jack Kirby, need no plot at all. I mean, I’ll just say to Jack, ‘Let’s let the next villain be Dr. Doom’… or I may not even say that. He may tell me… he just about makes up the plots for these stories. All I do is a little editing.”
At this point it's also well documented that Steve Ditko wasn't even on speaking terms with Stan towards the end and was just delivering the Spider-man pages.

I think it's worth differentiating Stan Lee from Marvel Comics, even if they seem synonymous because of Stan incessant "branding" in his PT Barnum style.

Both were screwed over by Marvel at different times in different ways. After all, Stan was Work For Hire as well. Making his salary (which was a step up from Freelancer) in exchange for these "ideas" of his that the company and Goodman profited from in the millions.

I think someone earlier in the thread made mention that Martin Goodman was Stan Lee's uncle-by-marriage, which doesn't mean they really had a familial relationship. When Goodman sold Marvel in the seventies (I believe it was to Cadence?), he had said something to the effect that he'd "Take care of Stan". Of course Stan didn't feel very taken care of after the buy-out, particularly as a loyal Company Man going back decades. But what should he expect? Goodman also failed to live up to his verbal promise to take care of Kirby if he testified on behalf of Marvel against Joe Simon on the Captain America lawsuit years prior. But what can you expect from businessmen who were not that far removed from the organized crime figures detailed in Gerald Jones' groundbreaking book Men of Tomorrow.

So what does Stan do? He not only had become Marvel's Walt Disney, he went to Hollywood and turned himself into Mickey Mouse, which is why so many in this thread feel so fondly about the Stan of their childhoods, the one narrating the cartoons and writing the comic strip.

Heck, I know McDonalds is bad, but I really can't help getting that "Ratatouille" feeling like the food critic in the Pixar film experience, when I bite into a Big Mac. BID.

Then Stan the businessman learns from his earlier experiences and parlays he fact that he's the Marvel Figurehead into much better contracts with each subsequent buyout. To the point where he was able to sue Marvel for millions when they finally broke his exclusive contract in the nineties. And still commands Big Money now in the twilight years for sitting around making with his Jibber Jabber.

Despite all of this, CMonster's assessment of Stan Lee as a fool might not be far off in light of the fact that Smilin' Stan isn't sitting in jail, and his business partner in Stan Lee Media was Peter Paul.
Peter F. Paul - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If this doesn't demonstrate Stan's foolishness by getting in bed with this guy, then he's got to be akin to Kevin Spacey's character of Keyser Söze from The Usual Suspects.

But this also goes to show you just how bullet-proof the Stan Lee iconography is... he goes from nearly taking down the Clinton administration to walking across the set of all these Marvel movies and re-Imagining the DC characters with solid sales numbers. And now has launched yet another Multi Media venture!

Stan Lee deserves a thousand stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work in the Simpsons episode "I am Furious Yellow".

This is not opinion, it's fact.

Anyone who has seen this episode can confirm it.

Stan Lee: “Hold it son. Wouldn't you rather have an exciting action figure?”

Database: “Ahh, but only Batman fits in my Batmobile.”

Stan Lee: “Are you nuts? The Thing fits in there perfectly. Look, he's fitting right now.”

Database: “AHH! You broke my Batmobile!”

Stan Lee: “Broke? Or made it better?"

(hums theme from Spider-Man while putting Marvel comics over DC comics on the rack.)

Perception=reality. Case in point; people think Tim Burton doesn't suck, he is thus allowed to continue making movies. Usually the same movie over and over. People love AC/DC; they are allowed to make the same album over and over. I could go on.
Of all the souls I have encountered his was the most...human.

Is it me or does Sandy not like Jason? This thread is really disappointing on many levels and I'm sorry I read it. Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves. Wow.

I like Stan Lee and think he should have a star. Just my opinion. The personal attacks on this are ridiculous and disappointing.
