I'm not a fan of his, and I know what he said doesn't sound good but I will defend him a bit here... He said it would come out sounding like Stan Lee circa 1962... and on a bender, while rushing to make a deadline. Comic book writing style then is not comic book writing style now, and I know what he's talking about. That old school internal dialog. What was great/fine then doesn't fly now. I'm not sure he was bashing Stan as much as saying he'd have had to revert to an antiqueted style to say something. It probably sounded funnier in person than in print... I know I'm much funnier in person than print... However not as tall or good looking

Even if it was "funny" spoken it's a very mean line. How would he know what Stan's work would come out like "on a bender while rushing to meet a deadline" I certainly don't (I don't even know if Stan would). if his intent was to say it would have sounded like something written in the 60's rather than today he could have left Stan out and spoke of comic writing in general. We all can misspeak but for him to say it that way means he has at least in his head compared his writing to Stan's in the 60's and felt his is betterI'm not a fan of his, and I know what he said doesn't sound good but I will defend him a bit here... Then he should go back to the touchy feely crap and leave the DCU alone. I can't wait for the retconning of Trails of Shazam from DC. Ya know it's funny but on the Real World I hated him there too...just couldn't get into his "character". I preferred Rachel and the antics of Puck.A Biographical Pulitzer Prized nominated Graphic Novel called Pedro and Me, and he also appeared on an early season of MTV's Real World (an experience he based Pedro and Me on).Think OUTSIDE the Box! And shouldn't it be "Pedro and I"?Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!Comment

I think Stan Lee is overrated to begin with. he takes credit for creating stuff that he never even created, he was just in the same room when it happened. Without Kirby, Lee would be nothing. Just my opinion.Comment

And vice versa...Stan's scripting made Kirby's ideas enjoyable to read. Kirby when left to his own devices created some super concepts no doubt, ala the New Gods and other DC stuff, but the execution was sometimes a little lackluster. Further example is the independent stuff he created after Marvel/DC, no big whoop if you know what I mean.Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!Comment

As a team they were terrific, when they both did things on their own, not as sucessful. They complimented eash other creatively, apart their weaknesses showed.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions

I think Winnick got his foot in at DC with "Pedro and Me", but his "celebrity status" from MTV no doubt sweetened the deal. DC and Marvel seem enamored with anyone from any other medium who wants to work in comics. Its funny how although the say they love them, many of these "outside" guys show little to no respect for prior characterization, past comic creators, and have little to no understanding about how to pace a comic story or conceive an intricate plot. It's all very realistic, ironic, and dull as dishwater.
I think Winnick got defensive because every comic fan who caught wind of his "Wedding Special" called foul on why one of the DCU's greatest fighters couldn't stop a guy without killing him. He blurted out the Stan Lee quote, and his likely to not hear the end of it for a LONG time.

Ok. Stan Lee currently comes across as rather arogant, hokey, and somewhat out of touch with the current comic business. Is he? Maybe, maybe not, but in interviews he tends to come across as such at times.
Regardless, you give that man respect.
The Marvel Universe is a monument to the man.
Like an old war veteran, who may SEEM to be less than what he was to younger eyes. Those younger eyes that have never seen what the old war horse has seen, in part because of that man's sacrifice.
The man has earned this respect.
He and the rest of the writers and artists of that generation had to work harder, faster, more often, and for less money than those of today. Lee was writing how many books at one time? Kirby was drawing how many books a month? How many came out late? These guys didn't start at the ground floor, they built it, so that guys like Winnick can live in the penthouse.
Winnick may have been trying to make a funny, but quite frankly he comes off sounding like a little kid playing solider tearing up the lawn of the man next door who fought in the war.
I'm not knocking Winnick's appeal, his ability, nor his talent. I have no right to do so. I'm knocking his turn of phrase. He could have worded it differently without naming Stan Lee, or anyone else.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you haven't noticed...John Byrne contributed a lot to Marvel. His Fantastic Four has been called the best story-telling since Lee and Kirby...He also helped make the X-Men the juggernaut (no pun intended) they are today. Those old sales numbers don't lie. As I said...New "talent" needs to stop bashing the past pros (this has nothing to do with fanboys/girls bashing past pros)...It's not professional or classy, in the least.>It sounds more like he's knocking (bashing) Lee's writing style, more than comparing his writing to Stan's.
.....mmmeeehhhh... that really sounds like he's saying he's better than Stan. "Stan would write that; but I wouldn't" is the message.
>New comic "talent" really needs to stop bashing the pros from the past
...except maybe Byrne. He was the first "designer cartoonist" I remember; a guy who was hyped as the biggest thing ever, above and beyond their produced works.

I shamefully admit watching Winnick's "Real World" season (as others have said, also the same season with the scene-stealing, scab-picking Puck). BUT, in my defense, I was the target age (18-20), and I was in college, and we only got like 3 cable channels on campus, MTV, ESPN, and The Movie Channel. So it was out of boredom more than anything.Man, you guys watched The Real World?
