    Winnick better than Stan Lee?

Just read this and it made me laugh....Winnick is describing the recent scene he wrote in the Green Arrow/Black Canary Wedding Special were BC seemingly kills GA:

And I could have put it in there – but it would have all been internal monologue. Sure, in my head, she was thinking all of that – “He’s crushing my diaphragm…can’t get a breath in…getting weaker…if I could just…if I could just…there!” Aaaaaand stab. Sure – that’s what she was thinking the whole time, but I’d rather throw up than write that. That’s Stan Lee circa 1962 on a drunken bender trying to get something knocked out before deadline, and he knows it’s the worst stuff he’s ever done
Is he seriously comparing himself to Stan the Man? Even with all of Stan's shortcomings as far as giving credit where credit is due in regards to Kirby, Ditko, et. al........he's 1000 times a better scripter than Judd Winnick! And a much more prolific "co-creator" than Judd will ever be.

    Puh-lease!

    (Okay my rant is done...)

It sounds more like he's knocking (bashing) Lee's writing style, more than comparing his writing to Stan's. Almost as if he's implying that Stan's writing would be even worse than ususal, if he was on a bender.

New comic "talent" really needs to stop bashing the pros from the past (whether it be Lee, Kirby, Ditko, Claremont or even John Byrne)...Without them, comics would probably not still be around and these newbs would probably not be employed in the biz.

.....mmmeeehhhh... that really sounds like he's saying he's better than Stan. "Stan would write that; but I wouldn't" is the message.

        >New comic "talent" really needs to stop bashing the pros from the past

...except maybe Byrne. He was the first "designer cartoonist" I remember; a guy who was hyped as the biggest thing ever, above and beyond their produced works.

I personally have never liked anything that Winnick has done, and I have given him many chances. I think maybe 5 issues is all I can stand before I drop the title from my list at the comic shop. Maybe I need to go on a drunken bender before I read his stuff so I can enjoy it.
Don't be sorry. How would you know? You've been watching MTV all your life.

I think Whining (er i mean Winnick) could have gotten away with a statement like this if he compared his work to anything Stan has done since he was pushed out the door at marvel in the last 15 - 20 years, but much like baseball you can't compare eras. the public perception and regulation of comics in the 60's-80's was so confining who knows what a stan of 20-40 would do today

Winnick seems to have no regard for the history of comics, and those folks who created the characters he gets to mangle on a monthly basis. This statement all but proves it.

When my kids go to bed wearing pajama's of something Winnick co-created I'll give him some credit but right now, I still prefer 40 year old Stan Lee stories to his work.

Justin Timberlake once compared himself to Kurt Cobain, basically saying they were equals in song writing ability.

Go back and read some of the early Stan Lee Spider-Man comics.

Yes, his writing style was a bit campy but so was the 1966 Batman show and I love both. But scratch beneath the surface and you'll find that Stan Lee not only created some of the popular Superheroes and villains of all time, he was an innovator even back then....addressing drug abuse and not receiving the stamp of approval, the first death of a major character and villain for that matter. That's just the tip of the iceberg.

I'll admit this - I've read exactly one Winick book I ever enjoyed, and that was Barry Ween, Boy Genius. I gave him a chance on Exiles and didn't last long. Now, whenever he comes on a book, I'm dropping it.

What characters is Winnick responsible for creating?

                        Barry Ween obviously.

I'm not too familiar with The Exiles or The Outsiders, from what I can tell they are largely derivative characters... a female android that turned out to be an iteration of Brainiac, Black Lightning's daughter, and a piece of Metamorpho that gained it's own life?

Is he credited for the new Red Hood? Even that was an existing character in the form of Jason Todd, and a double derivative as one part Robin and one part Joker.

Although I'm imagining it's only a matter of time before The Red Hood appears in the aisles of Toys R Us in action figure format. I honestly never thought Nightwing would appear to the general public, particularly around the time that The New Titans was on the verge of cancellation.

Lo and behold, cut a few years forward and there's Nightwing appearing on the hugely popular Batman TAS Gotham Knights incarnation alongside Timm Drake as Robin and Batgirl. Then the merchandise followed.

Actually a nightwing toy apeared in toy Aisles before BAS season 4 in the rightly forgotten Legends of batman Line from Kenner (1992-93??) but it does have the distinction of using the original Nightwing costume

Entirely my point, it's easy to slag the writing in a comic written before you were born but we're still discussing those characters and comics to this day. Not bad.

When Winnick writes and creates Icon Characters that just by sight people who don't follow comics Know.... then he can say whatever he wants till then he should keep his trap shut....Stan along with some of the Greatest artist in Comicdom changed the way we read and see comics....I doubt Winnick will ever reach that level.
