Must Read!! Modern superheroes called a bad influence on kids.

This article was published on MSN tonight...

Search: Superheroes bad role models? - Superheroes bad role models

I have to agree...superheroes are not what they used to be. Call me old fashioned, or "lame" if you want, but I miss the days of Superfriends and Megos, the Incredible Hulk and Wonder Woman on TV, and good WHOLESOME comic books.

I wouldn't let my child read half the garbage being printed out there right now. I remember being excited to find out recently that Captain Action was coming back, until I read the first issue. In the first several pages, Captain Action was having a threesome, with empty booze bottles on the nightstand, when a bunch of assassins bust into the room. Naked Cap kills them all, even breaking a booze bottle and shoving it into one guy's throat.
Yeah, I'm gonna let my kid read THAT.
In the pursuit of more adult comic characters, the comic and film industries have IMO tarnished the image of pretty much all the classic heroes beyond repair. Look no further than this winter's upcoming Green Hornet movie. Britt Reid is now apparently a lazy stoner idiot. Remember Superman Returns? My generation's Superman didn't stalk his ex girlfriend and spy on her with his X-ray vision.
I hope it's not too late to salvage what once was. I think if you grew up in the 70's like me, you'll admit that superhero comics were very influential...and in a GOOD way.

I'm with ya. When I used to work w/ the after school group, I'd take them to the comic book store twice a year. The rule was that a teacher had to check what they bought before they paid for it. The comic store staff was very helpful and always recommended the Archies, Cartoon Network stuff. There are some comics that are rethinking the way they do things and gearing it more toward the grade school set. And Art has his Tiny Titans which is appropriate. But most of the stuff printed today for the adult comic geeks is not for children. And I do think Superheroes should be wholesome fun, not stuff you have to censor. I miss the 70s superheroes too.

I'm really worried about what kids today take away from this stuff. This week in Wal-Mart I overheard something downright disturbing. Two kids probably 10-12 years old were talking about some new Batman Red Hood DVD, and how awesome it was watching Joker beat somebody to death with a crowbar.
      That scared me...A LOT.

Yeah, bump this "Dark Knight" stuff. And yeah, I know that's how it was written. But like Enyawd, I'm a child of the 70s. Give me Adam West, Superfriends, Filmation Batman. I gurantee you NO ONE beats anyone to death w/ a flippin' crowbar!

What are your kids reading? Might I recommend...

The newly relaunched Brave and Bold Comic? Superman's in it!

Does it have to be Superheroes? When I was a kid there was Little Archie, Disney and Casper stuff. Oh wait... there still is!

In fact, with all the stuff collected in trades, not only do your kids have access to all those comics you had as a kid, they have more variety available to them than ever before. In fact, EVERYONE, including adult readers have much more variety and access to a diverse amount of comics than any other point in the history of North America. Many great comics are just a google search away on the internet, or can be downloaded into your phone.

I understand your point guys but in regards to the Joker you're turning a blind eye....he's been a murderer from the get-go and has racked up quite the body count over the years....the Cesar Romero era not withstanding...

With super heroes comics there are some kid friendly spin off titles but there isn't one cohesive universe all in the same continuity. Since the mainstream DC and Marvel universes have maybe become too dark and violent for children maybe they could start a separate continuity of all age titles.

And I don't mean Muppet Babies cutesy pre-school type stuff or humor titles. I mean a regular continuity of heroes (Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Justice League, etc.) in one universe but with the violence and mature themes toned down.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

You mean like the MARVEL ADVENTURES imprint? It's been published for years and years, encompassing a number of titles, and preceded by MARVEL AGE imprint prior to that.

At this point anyone claiming that they cannot find ANY appropriate comics for their kids to read is LAME because they can't be bothered to even lift a finger to try and look. All they need to do is go to a good comic shop, most major book stores, online or even via their phone aps! If you crave the OLD FASHIONED comics from the seventies, they are all there in collected editions as well.

                            Does DC?

And it's not like many of these titles don't have their own continuity! Our own Mego Milk is creating quite the expansive kids oriented universe over in the Johnny DC imprint given all the spinoffs like the Little Archie Crossover and the Superpets.
