I will admit here and now, that while I only pick up an issue here or there.......I enjoy reading Archie.I picked up about 20 NM ones (regular size books) at a flea market about a month ago for $1 each. All from mid 70's.
Great reads.

I LOVE pre-1980 Archie. Especially the early digests with all the 40's & 50's reprints.

I'm guessing you haven't heard of it because you are not a ten year old boy, which is the primary market for Shonen Jump, not middle age men.
Check out the kids magazine section of most major bookstore chains. It's there.
Even if they don't know Shonen Jump specifically, ask any kid if they know what Naruto and Bleach is.
The point that is being made here is that there is a kid audience that is interested in comics, however for the most part it's in the form of manga.
It's not about taste or preference within the form that we're discussing here, it's a commentary about the medium and the diversity of the audience and material and format.
Most middle age comic fans immersed in the comic shop culture don't have any interest in Manga, and most kids who are into manga aren't into "Dad's" floppy pamphlets from the comic store. "Big eyes and speed lines." They took the most blatant design aspects, not the pacing, story technique and type of characterization. Then they tried selling them to the comic shop crowd; who typically have a hate-on for anything that remotely smacks of a Japanese comic.

Yeah; I think the bias works both ways. Superheroes come across as silly to a lot of Japanese comic fans.

My only fears with Disney owning Marvel is that they are notorious for not releasing things to home video that will sell , like how Disney already owned most of the Marvel Animated shows, and still most of the most treasured have yet to see quality or even releases at all. The other fear is will they start making the Movies under the Disney banner , and will they be done right or with the usual Disney Campy feel. I do agree they could help save Marvel and help push comics back into mainstream stores , question is do stores and Pharamacy's see it profitable to carry them again.In The " Real World " Vampires Do Not Sparkle. 'Course, it's possible they could KILL comics again. Non-Marvel stuff sells just fine, Marvel doesn't. What would happen if Disney used their influence to push Marvel comics on retailers? If they still didn't sell.... and there's no guarantee they would.... stores would end up with loads of books that didn't move, and those Marvel comics could be clogging up shelves that would have had things people would have actually bought. You'd cut off access for non-Marvel stuff, alienating fans; and you'd give the impression to reatilers (who probably wouldn't differentiate) that comics don't sell. And everything would contract. Again.

It is sure unbelievable how Disney can go to deep measures to preserve their trademark name all right... I never thought I can see the day that Marvel is to be under Disney for good...
It is very interesting to read other peoples general comments or debates between the older and new generation...
I am in my 30s. I grew up collecting Gladstone Disney comics from my local newsagency in New Zealand..
Uncle Scrooge Adventures 1 was my first purchase and got hooked on buying them. From up to date I have nearly all of the Gladstone comics...
I really love the Carl Barks stories..and knows every single Carl Barks stories.
It is sure a shame those great Carl Barks classics will never be printed in newsagents for those future kids to buy and read as kids nowdays are getting more technology advanced and moving on the future and trying to catch up on too many thingsComment

Something else to consider....
4.5 Million Scholastic books in print. That's the bookstore market, although I'm sure the Scholastic Book Club is pretty significant in the success of Bone as well.
That's probably a pretty hefty jump in readership from Jeff Smith's days self publishing Bone for the direct market of comic book stores, and I don't doubt that Bone found much more of a kid's readership under the Scholastic imprint.Last edited by samurainoir; Sep 6, '09, 6:04 PM.Comment

I doubt it. I'm thinkin' nothing's really gonna change for the COMIC part of the outfit. You'll see some names move around, and that'll be it. The comics themselves are such a small part of Marvel Entertainment I don't think Disney will care. They're probably more interested in movie, tv and toy rights.

According to that quote..I find it sad when you hear the oldster whining about how much the new incarnations of their favourite superheroes are SOOOO badly done. And then you ask what they'd LIKE to see, and the describe a Japanese comic. And yet, they'd never think to read a Japanese comic.
Yes I do read "Japanese" Manga stories... ONLY.... to read "BloodFist" and "Drunken Fists" and those Kung Fu comics... and ofc Astro Boy...
The others does not just appeal to me at all sorry...
They are like "Disney" versions in Hong Kong... I loved that bloody great character with a mask with no arms with long sleeves.. I think his name was Ghost Shadow siding with "Hero" who withhold a red sword... Pretty impressive kung fu moves for a "Japanese" comic...
I DO have the whole set of those Jademan Kung Fu comics and LOVE them like Disney as well too...Comment
