Watchmen DVD Out This Tuesday

I didn't read the comic back in the day, but I read the TPB in anticipation of the movie.

I'm glad I did. It made the movie very enjoyable, because I felt like I was in on an inside joke in a lot of scenes. I appreciated the subtleties of the movie and the subtleties far outweighed the violence, gore, and sex.

When I saw the movie in theaters, I caught the comments afterward and they were overwhelmingly negative. However, the comments revealed that most of the audience had no clue what they were getting into because they hadn't read the story beforehand. Comments like,"I don't know what I was looking at and I didn't understand anything except that lil' Roarshaw dude was a bad dude." reveal that you kind of had to do your homework before seeing it.

If it's not too late for you, read the TPB then see the movie..........it makes for a VERY fulfilling experience. Otherwise, yeah...the violence, sex, and gore are a bit shocking and will be all you take away from it. Heck, that was in the book....you should have known what you were getting into. The movie was so much more than that. I didn't even notice most of that except Malin Akerman in her nekkid glory was really hawt.

I know people who never read the comic and loved it, theose who love the comic and hated the film, and plenty who like me knew the comic and like the film.
The film has so much of the story presented it isn't necessary to read the comic first. Frankly i can't think those who greatly disliked the film finding the story any more palatable as a comic if they read it first they simply wouldn't see the film

I guess I wasn't very clear in what I was getting at. I agree that it isn't necessary to read the comic first to get the story. What I found beneficial by reading it first was picking up on the subtleties that the filmmakers dropped in.

Example: the muzak playing in the lobby while Adrian Veidt is lecturing Iacocca and company on their ambition. It was those little "inside joke" things that made it enjoyable to me.

(I do think that reading the book helps you understand the characters and their motivations better, though. Character development is sometimes short in a movie...any movie.)
