Without a question I am a fan of the Watchmen now. I'm going to watch it again tonight because I got distracted away a few times early on and might have missed a few things. Overall a very well made film and I'm disappointed it didn't get better reception at the box office. Very deserving. But it's one of those films that falls between key market groups. Definitely okay for teenagers, but not for a child who gets taken to see Spiderman. I laughed when I thought of mom and dad's taking their kids to see this, but then again the trailers didn't exactly prepare you for what you got, so I do understand the confusion. It ranks high on my personal list though for quality hero/sci-fi films. Certainly a standard that will be hard to beat. It was refreshing to see all of the political correctness taken out. Made them considerably more believable.

BK, when you take into account that Nixon had the Comedian and Dr. Manhattan in his pocket, it'd be easy for him to stay in power. You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren't happy in one place, chances are you won't be happy anyplace. -Ernie BanksComment

Black knight - yes the material in watchmen feels dated now after all the comic itself was written in 84-85 before the fall of the USSR and it's primary driver the fear of nuclear annihilation was over before the 12th issue hit the stands with the fall of the berlin wall.
was there too much sausage in it probably but blame dave gibbons for that that's how he drew Dr manhattan all through the book, same with the sex. Watchmen was one of the earliest stories aimed at the aging up comic reader.
is still a best seller on the NYT unheard of for a graphic novel hence why DC made this before something like an AQUAMAN, FLASH OR a GL film - it is a set peice 12 issues no more so there is no debate as to what "version of the character to use" and the consistent sales guanteed they would have people come out to see it if only to see the panel to panel recreation on film.Comment

I think they were hoping to capitalize on the CURRENT climate to make those things pertinent. Like how a lot of folks were concerned over the circumstances of "Dubbya's" election, and a group of terrorists getting a nuke. (Everything old is new again....)
>but blame dave gibbons for that that's how he drew Dr manhattan
Well.... Gibbons didn't draw him as.... er.... PRONOUNCED as he was in the movie. (Maybe Manhattan's been answering those "herbal magic" e-mails?)
>same with the sex.
I gotta say that sex and sexuality is something that DC (and Marvel) handle VERY awkwardly. Even the Watchmen comic had a lot of 14 year old "point and giggle" to how they dealt with sex.
>I really don't understand the Over All Hype & Allure to this AT ALL.
I think for a lot of folks, Watchmen was their first encounter with a "grown up" comic book; so it made a lasting impression on them. I'm kinda with you on this one; I don't think it was a BAD book, but it wasn't the end-all be-all that most fans make it out to be.
Oddly enough, I agree with Moore on something:
Watchmen Gave Us Permission To Read Green Lantern, Says Moore - watchmen - io9
I still think that books like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns were steps BACK for comics as a whole, since they allowed mainstream comics to appropriate the boom of the early 80's; which squelched a lot of stuff that was being done by the (then) up and coming independants.

There was Much More SO Porn in this Flick than on any Soft-Core Porn Flick on Showtime back in the Day.... I can't help but wonder,.. How much of that was even needed to tell the story ? ... I know the 50 + scene's of the Glowing Blue "Package" didn't need to be scene.Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!Comment

I loved it. my wife hated it. I bought the extended cut but am still waiting for Amazon to get it to meComment

I enjoyed it. There's no excuse for the glowing manhood IMO. The marathon three hour viewing made me wonder if I'd be able to take the "Extra Super Cut" with the Black Freighter stuff intermingled that's due out in December. Jackie Earle Haley rules, although when I first saw him sans costume I thought Danny Bonaduce was making a cameo.Comment

... Yeah Well I just say this Last Night,.. & I dunno.
I can't say that I care for this Movie or Story as much as the rest of you guys apparently Do. I really don't understand the Over All Hype & Allure to this AT ALL.
The Social Political Angle of this Movie ,.. was told in this formate about 20 yrs to late as far as it hitting the big screen. The Whole Idea of Nixon staying in Office for 4 terms,.. is Just the Stupidest thing in the Story it's self.
Rorschachs constant display of Narrating overshadowing got boring & over repeated so damn much,.. I found myself getting board towards the last scene's of it,.. & Ultimately I found myself struggling to not pay attention that much .... ... This is Why I say,.. When you have strong reading "Monolging" parts,.. you have to have a Actor Who can Pull it off & Keep your interest.
The Main plot in the Flick had me seriously not carring that Much with the 3 hr build up it had.... I personally would have much rather scene a story with the mini - stories & plots,.. because I did enjoy them a ton more,.. & liked that stuff.
I scene Ozymandias becoming the "Villian" or rather the "conflicting opponent" with some grand master plan long before it was reviled & when it was,.. I was at "meh" in it's self,... the twist of Plot as to why the character did what he "DID" WAS not rewarding at all imo ,... & was even more so tanted with Rorschachs death.
There was Much More SO Porn in this Flick than on any Soft-Core Porn Flick on Showtime back in the Day.... I can't help but wonder,.. How much of that was even needed to tell the story ? ... I know the 50 + scene's of the Glowing Blue "Package" didn't need to be scene.
Yeah Like I said I dunno,...
I think of this Movie,.. & story as one of them "aRT-Zy" "Fart-Zy" Type of Movies that always seem to Win Awards & Esteam from the Mass's & Hollywood,.. However I never really much like. This one Just Had Super Hero's & Visal CGR Graphics.
After Watching this,... I can't help but think of what Bruce wrote,.. as far as wanting his Money Back after watching Constantine....
The Only thing "Brillant" or "Amazing" about this Movie & Comicbook Story ,... is the fact of How many people bought into this Nonsense, & the Fact that DC Comics Chose to Make this Movie ,.. over ALL the rest of thier A List Properties in DC Comics.sigpicComment

It's looking like this is a film you love or hate. You either catch the meaning early or your turned off because your reading it too literally. The story is multi-layered with several degrees of social commentary, using the primary characters as a metaphor for how society views those which it covets as "heroes" and the reality of what most heroes are made of. Society is flawed. This idea that people are guided by naive notions that there is only good and evil, right and wrong, black and white drives the story. Making the primary players comic-style heroes only underscores the message. At the end, society finds peace by finding common ground with their enemy based on a false label of blame. Very much in the same manner they labeled their heroes, through assumption and self-created definition of heroics. The story took you through key moments in history, including presidents which we coveted and villianized then turned it on it's ear to underscore how easy it could have been to have taken someone like Nixon and make his legacy entirely different if you change the circumstances for how society could view him. Brilliant movie.Comment

I didn't read the comic back in the day, but I read the TPB in anticipation of the movie.
I'm glad I did. It made the movie very enjoyable, because I felt like I was in on an inside joke in a lot of scenes. I appreciated the subtleties of the movie and the subtleties far outweighed the violence, gore, and sex.
When I saw the movie in theaters, I caught the comments afterward and they were overwhelmingly negative. However, the comments revealed that most of the audience had no clue what they were getting into because they hadn't read the story beforehand. Comments like,"I don't know what I was looking at and I didn't understand anything except that lil' Roarshaw dude was a bad dude." reveal that you kind of had to do your homework before seeing it.
If it's not too late for you, read the TPB then see the movie..........it makes for a VERY fulfilling experience. Otherwise, yeah...the violence, sex, and gore are a bit shocking and will be all you take away from it. Heck, that was in the book....you should have known what you were getting into. The movie was so much more than that. I didn't even notice most of that except Malin Akerman in her nekkid glory was really hawt.Last edited by saildog; Jul 23, '09, 7:06 PM.Comment
