Comic artists you can't stand

Since we've gone through a bunch or artist lists recently, here's one to get the Hatorade flowing.

Rob Liefeld - I've never liked one thing this guy has done. Even in his ultimate hype era, I thought he was a hack that only rode the wave of early 90's trends of eight-foot ponytails, ten pound shoulder pads and accessorising with a minimum of five pouch belts somwhere on the body. He couldn't draw basic anatomy and he couldn't draw a background to save his life. Aside form that, he's okay.

John Bogandove - I have no idea why his art was selected for so many Superman products through the years, but it probably led to his decline in popularity. His line work was way too thick and he mangled every face he attempted. Horrible.

Tom Grummett - Maybe he got work cause he could pencil an entire issue during an episode of Brisco County Junior. Everything I've seen from this guy looks like it was rushed and little thought went into it.

There's probably more, but those are my three main offenders. It's cool they got work in the comic field and probably were/are able to take care of their families, but their final product was pretty awful in my eyes.

I don't think there's anyone I really hate.....Take Liefeld for example...he has produced some cool stuff and created a slew of characters that the X-titles are still mining today. But then again, he's also responsible for the horrific Heroes Reborn relaunch of Captain America.

As a kid, I despised Jack Kirby....absolutely hated him....couldn't stand his 70s work...the Eternals, Captain America, Devil Dinosaur....it took me a while to appreciate his work and the tremendous influence he had on what I read, specifically early Marvel. I ate that stuff up thanks to all of the Fireside books and the Pocket paperbacks and was "convinced" that Stan Lee had created everything all by his lonesome....never realizing that King Kirby was there also. Early misguided youth I guess.

I disliked Frank Miller's work also when I first came across it in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #14 (Dr. Strange and Spidey team-up against the Bend Sinister...lol). I remember thinking that this guy probably wouldn't get work again....but the next year he was back in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #15 with the Punisher. He been working on Daredevil all along but I never really took notice until he offed Elektra.

I will say though that I don't care for a lot of these new artists that are popping up that are doing more of a painted style...Marvel seems to be getting into that more...I like a good old-fashioned look to my funny books.

^ I didn't mind Balent when he was on Catwoman so much but since then his self-published Black Rose Tarot whatever crap looks sooooo amatuerish it's not even funny. I'm sure it has something to do with the ginormous boobs everyone seems to have.

I used to like Giffen when he was on the Legion initially...but then he started drawing in the style of Jose Munoz and was swiping panels and stuff. That was around the time of Hex if I recall...Everything looked muddy too. I think he rebounded somewhat when he went into the Legion's "5 Years Later" phase but that didn't last long.

Yeah,.. Everytime I have scene that or a Book of that,.. I just laugh,.. & think , " Well,.. atleast someone out there,.. does think about them more than I do" .

I was never a Really big Fan of Miller either..., Nore Kirby. But as I get older,.. I do Respect Kirby. No Real Love for Kelly Jones,... However did like His 2 Batman Vampire Graphic Novels he Put out...

Mark Bright. Not really hate his art work just more irked over the way he draws noses. Always giving white guys black guy noses. Always thought his version of Hal Jordan just didn't look right.

Mike Sekowsky, Leifeld of course along with most of the Image guys of his ilk, Byrne's current work is really bland, and I know I'll get tomatoes thrown at me for this, but Micheal Turner really sucked eggs. He's right up there with Liefeld in the anatomy and the "how the heck can that person even be alive" catagory of drawing people.

As a kid I really disliked Kirby's work too. Esp. his 70s/80s stuff. Now I really like it, and of course admire the storytelling genius and raw power of the King. Same with Ditko, although I always liked his Spider-Man.

There are a few artists whose styles don't really jibe with me, but I admit it's just a personal preference, and that they must have chops, because they have a prolific career. Mark Bright is one, Klaus Janson is another. I only like Tim Sale's stuff every so often. Kelly Jones drew an impressive Batman (it's Wrightson's Batman on crack), but his other characters were disturbing. His Robin looked like a withered old man, and Alfred looked like an even uglier Walter Mauthau. He was best suited for Elseworlds and one-shots, not the Batman series proper.
