Yup! Big day today...my comic collection now tops 10,000 with 10,002
I've been buying comic on a "regular basis" since around 1977...previously it was hit and miss at newstands and drugstores. Prior to that my comics, the few I had, would wind up on my closet floor and then Mom would throw them out. Stuff like Batman, Casper and Archie.
But it really wasn't until 5th grade when I actively began collecting "titles" instead of "issues" here and there. Back then the big thrills for me were Batman, Daredevil, The Flash, Spider-Man and The Legion of Super-Heroes.
Although I am an admitted DC fan now, in the early days I was a Marvel junkie...thanks to the Fireside series ("Origins", "Son of Origins", "Bring on the Bad Guys") and the Pocket paperbacks. I was known as the kid who brought comics to school for the other guys to read during lunch or hidden in their desk.
Until some schmuck borrowed my copy of "Howard the Duck Magazine" #8...and never returned it. From that point on the library was closed.
Bought my first Overstreet Price Guide in 1978...because of the cost ($9.95!) I told myself that I'd only buy one every OTHER year. Since then I've only skipped 1979...
you see how long that lasted. And I'm such a completist I even picked up the '79 Guide years later for $5.00 at a used book store. Yes...I'm sick.
I probably would've topped 10K sooner but I was "banned" from buying comics twice if I recall. My mother though I was wasting too much time on "funny books". I remember after the 2nd ban I convinced her that I'd only buy "special issues"...like anniversaries and number ones. But that didn't last either.
How do I know I have that many? Yes...I keep an ongoing list. Surprisingly I know most of what I've got in my head and I've only bought doubles unexpectingly twice
.
Am I running out of space? Not just yet...but it is getting hard to squeeze books into the shelves and long boxes. Thankfully I'm not a stickler for bagging and boarding everything or I'd have even LESS space. But the majority at least are bagged. I remember when I had 100 comics...I brought up an old kitchen cabinet from the basement and hung it on my bedroom wall to house the books. Little did I know the psychosis that would develop.
And the sad thing is neither of my daughters are interested in my collection. When they did read comics it was "Power Puff Girls", "Sabrina" and "Barbie".
Just wanted to share!
