    Personal Collecting Milestone...10,000 Comics!

Yup! Big day today...my comic collection now tops 10,000 with 10,002

I've been buying comic on a "regular basis" since around 1977...previously it was hit and miss at newstands and drugstores. Prior to that my comics, the few I had, would wind up on my closet floor and then Mom would throw them out. Stuff like Batman, Casper and Archie.

But it really wasn't until 5th grade when I actively began collecting "titles" instead of "issues" here and there. Back then the big thrills for me were Batman, Daredevil, The Flash, Spider-Man and The Legion of Super-Heroes.

Although I am an admitted DC fan now, in the early days I was a Marvel junkie...thanks to the Fireside series ("Origins", "Son of Origins", "Bring on the Bad Guys") and the Pocket paperbacks. I was known as the kid who brought comics to school for the other guys to read during lunch or hidden in their desk. Until some schmuck borrowed my copy of "Howard the Duck Magazine" #8...and never returned it. From that point on the library was closed.

Bought my first Overstreet Price Guide in 1978...because of the cost ($9.95!) I told myself that I'd only buy one every OTHER year. Since then I've only skipped 1979... you see how long that lasted. And I'm such a completist I even picked up the '79 Guide years later for $5.00 at a used book store. Yes...I'm sick.

I probably would've topped 10K sooner but I was "banned" from buying comics twice if I recall. My mother though I was wasting too much time on "funny books". I remember after the 2nd ban I convinced her that I'd only buy "special issues"...like anniversaries and number ones. But that didn't last either.

How do I know I have that many? Yes...I keep an ongoing list. Surprisingly I know most of what I've got in my head and I've only bought doubles unexpectingly twice .

Am I running out of space? Not just yet...but it is getting hard to squeeze books into the shelves and long boxes. Thankfully I'm not a stickler for bagging and boarding everything or I'd have even LESS space. But the majority at least are bagged. I remember when I had 100 comics...I brought up an old kitchen cabinet from the basement and hung it on my bedroom wall to house the books. Little did I know the psychosis that would develop.

And the sad thing is neither of my daughters are interested in my collection. When they did read comics it was "Power Puff Girls", "Sabrina" and "Barbie".

    Just wanted to share!

Awesome to reach a milestone like that! Are you able to keep them in some semblence of order? How are you going to mark the occasion?

Even though I keep track of my comics (on 3x5 cards!), I also tend to rely on my noggin for what I have. Of course it has failed me once or twice and I've ended up with triples of a couple issues.

What are your longest uninterrupted runs of a title?
        .

Well there's DC arranged alphabetically on a ginormous bookcase, except for all Superman related which are on a spinner rack and JLA (longbox). Marvel arranged alphabetically on two smaller bookcases (still decent sized though), except for all Spidey (longbox) and X-Men (2 longboxes). Everything else is longboxed as I don't delve into those too much.

Probably Legion of Super-Heroes, through various title reboots and whatnot from the late 70s 'til oh recently when I dropped the book! Maybe Geoff Johns will relaunch and get me started again.
And I'm sure X-Men is up there too.

That's alot of comics! I'm not sure how many I have but I'd guess about 1200, mostly Wonder Woman.

How much space do they take up? How many boxes of long boxes is 10k?

When I started out in 1986 I had two titles. Avengers/ Defenders.
By the time the late 90s rolled around I was getting about 20 good Marvel and DC titles. By the end of the decade, I was literally running out of room.
Most of them are in a storage shed we rent because of space issues.

Today. I am down to about down to five titles. I praise anyone that can achieve what you achieved because space is such an issue.

                  Kudos my friend

                    Yes.
                    Congrats on the milestone.

My own collection appraoched 5,000 before I slowed down on the buying and started thinning it out.
Now I don't buy any new comics and haven't even had time to read one in probably 4 years now.
Though I have picked up an old issue here and there, mostly 70's horror stuff.

Think my collection is down to about 2000 issues now, with almost 1000 of them being Conan or Conan related.
Still takes up quite a bit of room.

Wow. That's a lot. Are they insured, specifically, not just under homeowners??

I find that space is playing more of an issue these days as well as general disinterest in the direction of a lot of titles I USED to like. I'm trying to vote more with my wallet as they say and it's helping to curb the collection from taking over the house at some point.

In the late 80s-early 90s I was like a lot of other people and bought the multiple-hologram-embossed-foil-cut out covers when they first came out. I soon learned that this was a trend that apparently wasn't going to die anytime soon. Like today for example, how many multiple covers does an issue of "Red Sonja" need?
