Reagan was used quite a bit at DC. He was central to the Legends mini-series when the people turned against the super heroes. I think he was also in JLI a few times.

Regan even turned into a snake-person in Captain America toward the end of the John Walker/The Captain deal!

Actually, I'd say every President since FDR has been in at least one major comic at some point, but not with a big as splash as this. I'm sure this will have all the old speculators back out in force double-bagging it for posterity. It is cool though.

This is the VARIANT cover to the book and it's already popping over $125.00 on EBAY as a pre-sell. Marvel announced a second printing for mid-February.

I was at my local shop today and he had 6 calls for it while I was there.

All well and good, but as he said, I'll be lucky to get one or two of them anyway. He told me he has had to cut his order for Spider-Man since the new direction took effect as a lot of people dumped it fro their pull lists.

He had no advance warning of this cover nor anything in the previews order form about it for dealers to order by, no sales call from Diamond trying to up the orders. Same thing that happened with the Death of Captain America issue. No advance solicitation, only lots of calls after Marvel leaked it to the press. So again, instead of making it available to everyone that asks about it, my dealer will be turning customers away, telling them to come back in a month for the second printing, which of course, they won't as it's old news by then.
What gets me is that Marvel has had this in production for awhile- wouldn't surprise me if there was a John McCain version as well, ready to go in case he was the winner. So why keep it a secret, and why make it a limited variant knowing that the potential was there for a huge sales success for comic retailers who certainly could use the boost right now? Just another example of short-sighted money grabbing by Joey Q & Marvel...at least EGO Q. got to be on CNN again!

Good thing it wasn't Amy Grant on the cover. She would have Marvel's *** in a law suit.

Former NY governor and 41st VP of the US, Nelson Rockefeller used to show up in the FF all the time. Most of the time as Gov. of NY, but I seem to remember an alternate timeline/earth story where Rocky was Pres.

I don't think they had McCain as a back up issue.

I think they are doing this in Spiderman because President Obama actually collects Spiderman comics. Which is cool!

Maybe young people who voted for him will think comics are cool again.

Did anyone actually vote for McCain that was under 30?

              ooops....sorry.....no political stuff.

Awesome cover!!! Good way to make Obama "hip".

I dunno if it's the biggest book in Presidential history......Dell published some very successful bio comics for JFK, LBJ, and Eisenhower in the sixties, along with the LIFE STORIES OF THE AMERICAN PRESIDENTS Giant one-shot. The bios were popular enough that second runner ups like Adlai Stevenson & Barry Goldwater also got issues. The JFK issue was reprinted three times, and that was back when print runs exceeded 250-500,000 issues with availability on every newsstand.

Nixon was on the cover of DC's From Beyond the UnKnown #17 (which was an updated reprint of the Eisenhower version from Mystery in Space #30). Bill Clinton appeared in Topps' SECRET CITY SAGA (and got his own insert trading card along with Al Gore).

George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are probably the two Presidents who have appeared most in comics, in mamy, many time-travel stories. Lincoln had his own issue of Classics illustrated, as well as a Dell Giant. FDR certainly was in a number of stories, most importantly in the Origin of the JUstice Society story and the 1st issue of All-Star Squadron.

Well, you're probably right there about the McCain book.

But the point here is what if the local shops turn potential customers away next week who come in looking for a book that Marvel short-sightedly made a chase variant because they have none to sell ? How does that help encourage people to buy comics again. They just get mad and leave, and never get interested again. Plus they think the comic dealer is cheating them somehow.

We regular comic readers understand the mysterious ways of the chase variant. We all understand about second & third printings. And I think we all know enough to realize that the $125.00 the speculators are paying this week will be $10 or $15.00 in six months or so when interest falls off. I'll find my copy then, I can wait.

But really here is a golden opportunity for Marvel to reach out to young readers with the Obama issue, and instead they turned it into a circus event that only the speculators will benefit from.

Excellent points and I agree on them too. I'm guessing they are trying to get dealers to order more comics. Is this a 1 in 10 issue? It might benifit them in the short term but they might have found some long term fans if they did this as reg. comic cover. Oh well.

This is the EXACT same situation I am in at my store. This Obama variant is what I call a "hostage" variant, which is a variant Marvel forces you to order a certain amount (almost always much more than you will be able to sell) of the regualr issue in order to qualify to PURCHASE the Obama variant covers. The problem is the orders for this issue were finalized 3 weeks ago. While everyone was aware there was an Obama variant coming out, they we not aware that Marvel was going to make a huge press release 3 weeks later (it was on the Yahoo! home page Wed.) over a comic that Marvel limited retailers access to.

The other problem is to I want all these 1 time customers who I am never going to see again taking issues away from my loyal regular weekly customers?

So anyone who now call I tell them I am pre-sold out and if they want I can take their name and # down and call them when the second print comes in.

Agreed...I just talked to my comic guy and he was still not aware of the second printing that Marvel announced. I told him of the 2nd print which CBR is reporting must be ordered by MONDAY MORNING if retailers expect to get it with the following week's comics. There's another article on Newsarama about the availability:

Here's a link to the article both on CBR & Newsarama:

Newsarama.com : Obama/Spider-Man: Yeah, But Will I Be able to Get One?

If anyone picks up a spare copy, please PM me.

I am going to check some of the bookstores where there's at least a chance. Like many of you have said, I had to get on a waiting list at my local comic shop like everyone else...first come, first served which is fine by me.

They told me the same thing that was said here which was that they really didn't know how many copies of the variant cover they were going to receive and that it was based on the amount of normal copies they ordered but weren't sure what the ratio of regular to variant copies they would receive.

I personally am going to pick up a regular copy or 2nd issue when they are available (to read) and if necessary, wait for the prices to drop on Ebay before buying. It is a definitely a cool concept.
