Frank Miller vs Todd McFarlane

I bought Spaen Batman in a discount bin and I'll always remember the sight of Spawn with a Batarang in his face. Not the best story but that was quite a sight to see.

He took that Back to his Spawn book for about another 35 issues. Spawn Used a Shoe String to Tie his face back together,.. otherwise his face woulda Fell out.

Yeah my bass player was a big Spawn fan so I got to see that. Kind of cool he kept that in the continuity.

I don't get the Frank Miller thing personally. I still haven't finished Dark Knight and I've had it for like 8 years. His DD art was pretty good but I hate the way he draws Batman and the story wasn't all that interesting to me or I would've finished it long ago. I have his 4 issue Wolverine mini series and I've read it once. I've read other comics dozens of times. He really does nothing for me. I did quite like 300 though.

Now Todd's art isn't my cup of tea but at the time it was innovative. Lines everywhere that make no sense is not great art. However, his stuff was very dynamic. His capes looked like they were alive. His characters all look different. Not like someone drew the same guy with a different mask or whatever. Case in point: There was a fellow on Hulk right around when Image was blasting through and comics went to hell who was quite good but man, Hulk and Banner and Jones all looked EXACTLY the same! Hulk looked like Superman but green. Made no sense to me.

Todd made an interesting back story for his character and set about marketing him. The man may not be the best artist or writer but he sure knows how to take something and run with it. He's got a hugely successful company and a lasting character. Not bad. I bought Spaen Batman in a discount bin and I'll always remember the sight of Spawn with a Batarang in his face. For me, Todd wins. Eventhough I don't have much use for him.

Are you talking about Dale Keown? He was a pretty good artist a bit of a bryne clone when he began but soon took on his own style. He got lost at Image with his Hulk ripoff Pitt.

As far as McFarlane's Spidey art, I consider it an improvement over the Infinity Inc. stuff he was doing at DC prior...lots of distracting layouts and goobledegook cluttering up the pages.

That's called design and layout. And Todd did a damn fine job with it in Infinity Inc.

Todd's okay in my book. I don't see how anyone could defend Frank and his "wipe my a s s attitude with DC comics". No way in H E L L can anyone defend what he's done.

No that's called distracting from the fact that he couldn't draw anatomy very well...McFarlane himself has said that was the case. Smoke and mirrors...pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...that sort of thing.

Miller, hands down for me. I've always loved his stuff. The original Dark Knight and year one Batman comics were intense. Sin City is a great universe and his hooking up with Rodriguez to make the movie was brilliant.

His DK2 was some kind of big FU to DC I think. That was a big dissappointment, but unlike most opinions, I think his work on the Batman and Robin comic is awesome. At first I was offended by it, but once I realized it was taking place in the Dark Knight universe, and that this was the somewhat insane Bruce Wayne of that universe, I changed my tune. It's refreshingly nasty.

McFarlane I find fairly boring.

Actually, he's more like Prowler with a different coloured cape.... or Atlas' Demon HUnter with a different mask.... or Marvel's Demon Hunter with a different mask.....

Nope. This guy was after Dale. My bass player met Dale at a local comic shop. He's a super nice guy and took a copy of our demo with him. Dale's problem at Image was it took 3 or 4 moths for him to get a single issue of PITT out. He basically lost his audience. At the time, there was so much out there, PITT was forgotten about by most.

Edited. I found the guy. Gary Frank is the fellow who drew Hulk, Banner and Rick Jones with the same face.

Well that maybe what he said in hindsight, but at the time it was very refreshing to see an artist really fill up the comic page the way he did. Thanks for that bit of info.

Also Todd's work on Spiderman was hurried quite abit. At the time he was drawing Spiderman and Amazing at the same time. I've read a few articles that he said he would get so far behind that he had everyone and his brother helping out to meet a deadline.

Now Frank on the other hand can NEVER redeem himself for what he's done. I'm sure he has a stack of Golden, Silver, & Bronze DC comics sitting beside his toilet just waiting for his next idea.
