I Heard Back From the Late Show About My Letterman And Schaffer Customs!

    Hello, Everyone.

I just wanted to share this with all of you.

I did custom figures of David Letterman and Paul Schaffer a few weeks back

It's The Late Show...starring David Letterman! Paul Schaffer's Here, Too! - Mego Talk

On a lark, I sent photos of the figures to the Late Show, along with a few paragraphs describing how I did them and why (I've been watching Dave and Paul since he went on the air at NBC). I didn't list my phone or email contact, because I frankly never thought anyone would look at the pix, let alone reply.

I got a letter back from a production intern saying that they were considering using the figures on the show. She gave me a phone number of a person in charge of essentially audience show and tell.

I finally got the guy on the phone and he asked for a bit of background on the figures. I finished my description and he said something to the effect of (I'm paraphrasing): "Great. Can you send a couple in?" I replied "A couple? There ARE only two." Long story short, he wanted me to ship them to the show so that he could show them to the writers and producers. He really backpedaled when he heard they were one of a kind. I said to him "I'm not cranking these things out in my basement". LOL! I asked if the writers and producers could see what they needed from the photographs I sent in. He said it was an "easier sell" if they could see it for themselves.

He ended by saying that I should "really think about it" and that he'd have his intern email me his shipping info anyway (she later did). He really struck me as not wanting to take responsibility for the figures.

So...I'm leaning toward declining and telling the intern in an email that, if they were definitely going to use the figures, I'd send them but that, right now, they could be lost, damaged or stolen and the show still might not use them. In other words, if I send them in, there's no guarantee the show will use them and if something happened to them, I'd be really upset. I mean, it'd be different if Dave or Paul saw his figure and wanted it for himself; then I'd gladly give it to either or both. But it seems like these writers and producers sort of "scope" stuff for the show before Dave even hears about it.

That's the story! I'm actually pretty happy that they replied and that they really liked the figures. I just don't want to gamble on sending them into the show with this guy sounding so much like he wanted to "wash his hands" of any responsibility.

Depending on how long it takes to make another set...make another set and send it to them. My only Custom I ever made was of the character Jon Sable Freelance. I brought the figure to a Big Apple Show that I was doing as a dealer and sure enough Mike Grell was at the show. I showed it to him and he loved it. I told him I could send him one if he wanted one. I eventually made a second Freelance and sent it away to him. It's a great thing when people, especially the ones that the figures are made from, appreciate the work that you do. IMO I think Dave will probably like the figures.

^ Thanks so much for the comments, Blue.

You have an excellent point there. It'll take a helluva long time to make a second set, but maybe that's the way to go.

I wouldn't hesitate for a second to send them in. They'd be in a Fed Ex box tomorrow if I thought there was even a CHANCE they'd see the air.

Audience Show and Tell also might imply they'd be willing to have YOU on the show. More reason to send them I think.

Make molds of those heads and you can "crank 'm out in your basement" after all. That way you get to keep the originals and have plenty of copies to send to the show.
I've sent some customs to the States before to have them signed by the people they represent. Yeah, it's a risk and I don't feel at ease all the time they're gone, but hearing how the actors loved them makes it all worth it

These TV people are either not that wise---kinda cheap---or kinda lazy----

Your customs are great K----I thought so when I saw them and I apologize if I didn't
            comment on the thread----

Anyways---it strikes me that if they have that much interest in your figures---they
should foot the bill to send 'em---or hire you to make more----or just get someone
            else to make 'em-----

Hey this custom work is hard work----but there IS a price for everything and
doesn't the Letterman "team" have a "big time" budget anyway?

Send them!!! You know how to make them, and can re do them if they want to purchase them from you.

that is such an honor, to have some one actually give you a chance like that. I would take the chance up in a minute, like the old adage goes "any publicity is good publicity"

Yeah...I agree, Huedell. I guess that's part of what "threw me": the guy's off-putting attitude. *shrug* Maybe I'm being too sensitive.

Also, I admit to getting, and being, WAY too attached to my customs!

Wow! Thanks for the feedback and opinions, Everyone.

I sure have lots to think about. I know it seems silly to be so possessive about my figures....I will have to mull this some more.

I thank you all for your insight. You've certainly given me another viewpoint and I appreciate it.

A P.S. for all of the head casters out there: can I make a mold of a painted head without harming the paint? I'm talking about Paul's head; I already have a cast of Dave's. Paul's is a modified unpainted Kojak head and it'd save time and trouble to just cast it as-is rather than reworking another Kojak head.

congrats for the attention K. I haven't seen the figures but will look for them in the thread... Even if you just decide to keep them, it should feel good to have them noticed...

                            ^ Thanks, poly!

All the opinions here have me rethinking sending in the figures. I'm gathering materials to make myself a second set to keep.

                            Thanks again!
