Hello, Everyone.
I just wanted to share this with all of you.
I did custom figures of David Letterman and Paul Schaffer a few weeks back
It's The Late Show...starring David Letterman! Paul Schaffer's Here, Too! - Mego Talk
On a lark, I sent photos of the figures to the Late Show, along with a few paragraphs describing how I did them and why (I've been watching Dave and Paul since he went on the air at NBC). I didn't list my phone or email contact, because I frankly never thought anyone would look at the pix, let alone reply.
I got a letter back from a production intern saying that they were considering using the figures on the show. She gave me a phone number of a person in charge of essentially audience show and tell.
I finally got the guy on the phone and he asked for a bit of background on the figures. I finished my description and he said something to the effect of (I'm paraphrasing): "Great. Can you send a couple in?" I replied "A couple? There ARE only two." Long story short, he wanted me to ship them to the show so that he could show them to the writers and producers. He really backpedaled when he heard they were one of a kind. I said to him "I'm not cranking these things out in my basement". LOL! I asked if the writers and producers could see what they needed from the photographs I sent in. He said it was an "easier sell" if they could see it for themselves.
He ended by saying that I should "really think about it" and that he'd have his intern email me his shipping info anyway (she later did). He really struck me as not wanting to take responsibility for the figures.
So...I'm leaning toward declining and telling the intern in an email that, if they were definitely going to use the figures, I'd send them but that, right now, they could be lost, damaged or stolen and the show still might not use them. In other words, if I send them in, there's no guarantee the show will use them and if something happened to them, I'd be really upset. I mean, it'd be different if Dave or Paul saw his figure and wanted it for himself; then I'd gladly give it to either or both. But it seems like these writers and producers sort of "scope" stuff for the show before Dave even hears about it.
That's the story! I'm actually pretty happy that they replied and that they really liked the figures. I just don't want to gamble on sending them into the show with this guy sounding so much like he wanted to "wash his hands" of any responsibility.
