    Retro Action - A skeptic's review

Okay, I'll start the commenting with a fact. I really disliked the first two waves of figures. I wouldn't go so far as to call them a failure, but they fell waaaaay short of the mark. Floppy bodies, bad stitching, chest emblems falling off, sweating action all made their way into the production figures. I had pretty much written off any interest in these figures. I have much respect for EMCE and the efforts they put into them. It took a lot of love and time to get these made. Mattel just dropped the ball.

Now, fast forward to this evening. I recieved my Shazam figure from Ebay. Maybe it's cause I'm a Shazam fanboy, but only one word came to mind when I got him out of the mailer box...majestic.

This is a HUGE turnaround for the line, and I cannot be happier. I truly wanted this line and concept to succeed, and it appears that is going to happen. The suit and it's gold trim is a sight to behold. Very few of the pics do the suit justice. It's just stunning. The head sculpt is dead-on perfection. Sure he could have been CC Beck squinty, but this is much more effective and captures the boyish essence of the character. I have no idea how the changes were made from proto sculpt to this, but it's a 200 percent improvement.

The packaging is awesome too. That's an underrated part of the whole when examining a figure. The blue weathered look just simply works. The artwork chosen is a good representation of the era from which they were created. The entirety of the aesthetics is far beyond strong and a testament to hard work and evidence that a toy manufacturer actually listened to it's dissatisfied customers.

Bottom line, my mind has been changed big time. I don't say these things lightly. This is just such a treat to have this in my hands 37 years after I received my first Shazam figure. I almost have the same feeling. Now I've got to decide if I open the card...

Yeah, we got Sinestro a while back, and the floppy body disgusted me to the point of not even bothering with furthur characters. I think my biggest question is WHY on EARTH did Mattel go with this new body style, when Dr. Mego's Type-2s are pretty damn close to PERFECT??
(Especially after the STELLAR Trek and Apes re-Megos....I had such high hopes!)

I didnt know that you were a fan of SHAZAM. I actually have a 2-3" little SHAZAM around here somewhere...I got him many years ago along with a Supes. (The Supes now lives with another member..) His paint is slopping-away, and methinks that he was made as some sort of knock-off...he is in a heroic pose, solid rubber, and non-poseable...like a playset figure. When I am able to locate him, I'll send him off to you, eh?
(He deserves better than life at the bottom of a storage unit anyhow...)

I gotta say your honest review has really got me rethinking about Mattel's take on this whole retro revival line.

I too, was a bit disappointed with the results of the first wave. When I stood my retro Superman next to my original Mego Supes, my heart sank. Then, setting my custom 'in the works' Supes (with his Doc Mego suit, CTVT boots and Zica body) next to that, and I couldn't help but think, 'this is it? This is what we've been waiting for?'

Wave 2, still held out hope.
Looking at retro Batman next to Mego's...yeah...gettin' there...I think...but....

Wave 3...still don't have. Wasn't sure I was going to bother.

Now, hearing what you have to say about Mattel's retro Captain Marvel,
and how strongly you feel about it... honestly, you've got me really thinking about giving this line another chance.

I never wanted this retro series to fail. None of us did. Were we being too critical, too picky? No, I don't think so.

As a matter of fact, I really wanted to be proved wrong about this line.
I was hoping Mattel would make the changes we were feeling had to happen. Just didn't think it would really happen. Alot of us didn't.
I am so glad to hear that one 'skeptic' has changed his mind, particularly with the character that I can tell was one of his childhood favorites (and still is.)

Thanks for this review. I know it's not the first one on this line, and I have a feeling it won't be the last positive one, either.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Scott. I too had given up on this line. The Shazam figure looks great and hearing your praise convinced me, I am going to order one.

I still haven't had the courage to pull him off the card. It just looks perfect as is right now. I have no doubt when this line does meet it's end, Shazam will be in the top three best ones made. It's insanely well done.

I am now looking into getting the rest of this wave, a prospect I never thought I'd consider before Friday.

Interesting Scott, I'm of the exact opposite opinion. I liked Green Arrow, Wave 1, and Twoface & Aquaman from Wave 2. Sure the Bodies SUCKED on them, but that was a easy fix.

I've seen Wave 3 in the Store, and had no desire to buy any of them. Same goes for Wave 4....none of them interest me.

But I'm still holding out hope that I might want some of the Figures in Wave 5.

I am however looking forward to the Matty Exclusives of Sinestro & Kyle Rayner

What exactly has Mattel done to 'fix' the bodies, are they TIGHTER, or?

I have to ask, again, WHY on earth didnt Mattel just go with Dr. Mego's bodies rather than construct all new (seemingly FAULTY...) ones??

                Weird...

Because they wanted a body sculpt that they owned. Ownership on the Mego body sculpt is fairly unknown and Mattel didn't want any possibility of someone popping up and claiming they owned/sculpted it. Same goes for the heads, which is why all the heads have new sculpts.

And the body is fixed by adding a part to the waist.

What about Mego parts such as the Manta belt?
Or EMCE? Will EMCE and CTTV be in trouble down the road?

I dunno What to think at this Point.
At 10 Bucks each ..., I'd probably buy them all ..., or Most ..., At 20 + Tax ... or from Matty to ship me an Exclusive at 28.70 ... I just have more important things to collect ..., and after getting Tigerman from Zica for 36.99 Shipped ... I feel Ripped off by Mattels Vision at 20 + tax a piece, Retail Price.

I do want a ManHunter ....He's my Favorite Version of the Character.
... The Original Knight ..., Often Imitated, However Never Duplicated. The 1st Knight in Customs.

I know what you mean BK. I just bought the EMCE Wolfman, and Dam...that is one nicely made Figue(LOVE your Sculpt John). The quality just blows Mattel away. And he was only $14.99....worth every Penny!

I dunno, having just sold off my entire collection of waves 1-3 to a member here, I don't miss them at all. There were too many things I didn't like about them, which is strange.
I was in love with them at first, then the novelty wore off I guess and I began to see all the flaws.
I didn't have any real droopy bodies, but things like Superman's pink shorts, Aquaman's little boy headsculpt, etc., combined with the fact that I'm a Marvel guy made it easy to part with them.
I'm MUCH more excited about the new Marvel Captain Action line.
Now, if we get a retro Marvel line, I'll be singing a different tune...

I feel the same way about this line , I am loving everything I am seeing about it. The Bodies are improved the sculpts are fantastic thus far, and the outfits are great. Wave 4 shows how these have progressed , and I see more improvements coming as it continues. Seriously the design's are fantastic. Aside from the early body issues. Although I do wish these were on Docs bodies , but I accept what we have and am deciding to go with it... Looking forward to the GL exclusives , and what SDCC unveils.

As for the the Mego parts / Body rights ..... I thought it was said that the trademarks or copyright to the molds all expired since Mego was no longer in business to renew them. The only thing I think that remained trademarked is the "Mego" name which Marty owns again. I am sure Paul , Joe , and all the companies using the T2 body type have checked on all this well before beginning production. I dont think Mattel was worried about that , more so that they owned the who thing top to bottom. ( Hence the lack of Emce Logo on the packaging with Mattel's ) Either way the bodies are better and I am liking what Paul and Joe have done to get the feedback back to Mattel.
