what megolike figures would your KIDS like to see made?

This was brought up in one of the prez/monster threads.

Many of us have mego on the brain and in our hearts because we played with them as kids. It has been mentioned several times lately that the licenses chosen for some of the remegos do not seem to be kid relevant or kid friendly. It has also been mentioned that for 8" cloth goods figures to survive, there should be some kid marketed items. So....

If you posed this question to your children -

What characters would they bug you the most to buy if they were made as megolike figures?

Clone Wars, Harry Potter, Army/Soldiers, Super Heroes and Scooby Doo would all be popular with my son, and he's 5 years old. Of course with me as his Dad, he already has a custom mego Anakin Skywalker, Commander Cody and Obi Wan from Clone Wars using Pez heads. He has a Retro Batman too, but prefers the Batman he Made with Daddy, and he really enjoys building a figure more than just buying a pre-made figure.

I think anything that has to do with fantasy in the superhero or sci-fi world is taylor-made for kids and those young at heart.

The little boy I babysit would like Spidey and Iron Man; but not the red and yellow one, the dark one.

a little too broad a sweep there. If this worked, then the Ventures and TZ figures would make sense for kid sales. And I don't really think they do. Young at heart, yes. Under 10, probably not.

BandB, possible if Mattel ever got behind the style in that manner.
Spidey and IM don't look to be happening in the Hasbro world.
Star Wars - unknown. Hasbro seems to be pretty fond of the 1:18 scale. Most of the Unleashed and mid-scale items met with lukewarm reception and were discontinued. And Hasbro sent the 12" department over to Sideshow.

What other hero properties are airing on Kid radar?

None..... Sad to say most of the kids I know. Mine, their friends, kids in the neighborhood , everyone is in to video games and hi tech gadgets. They out grow toys in general very fast.

I have never seen a child even look at retro toys or any toys in general when I shop the action figure aisle. Just adult collectors and scalpers looking to pick up and sell to adult collectors.

I could tell you a few amusing stories with parents trying to push toys on their kids. Ooo wouldnt you like this? And what was said in reply.

That was me. In my opinion, if the Mego style wants to survive in the long run it has got to start making stuff kids want. Actual toys that would be fun to play with and not just more dust collectors to stand on adult collector shelves.

There are a lot on non license properties what would lend themselves to actual play. Imagine those Discovery type lines you see at TRU done in Mego style. Like a ocean exploration set with a deep sea diver with a shark or octopus, Military, police, search and rescue, safari, dinos, etc.

Fantasy lines are always big with kids. Lego does sets of them yearly and games like Dungeons and Dragons, Magic the Gathering and World of Warcraft are still very popular. Imagine a Mego style sword and sorcery line with paladins, clerics, death knights, wizards, elves, dwarves, goblins, trolls, dragons, horses and vinyl castle or dungeon. It would rock.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

lego is a pretty fun world and they have had a company brand space theme, adventure theme, and knight theme for as long as I can remember.

I think the mego version of this was the world's greatest knights, westerns, and robin hood.

I can see more of that type of thing going over pretty well in my household as the Imaginext playsets, playmobil, and other activity themes (vs. licensed character theme) are always popular.

If'n my kids could have licensed characters in figure form, I think it would be muppets.

Other than that, I think an AT style adventurer with some beasties like a yeti, swamp monster, etc. would be a big hit.

The perception among the manufacturers I have talked to is that generic lines are losers--it's all about licensing. But it hasn't really been tried, either. No one has really done knights or pirates very well, CTVT just doesn't count. The AJ PM line could have gone in this direction but it died. Wasn't there some Firefighter/Cop line after 9/11?

I only have a 3 year old so I don't have a lot of experience with kids and Megos. But when I look at modern toys they are so designed and engineered--from the large hands that hold accessories and the wide feet that stand easily....

Devil's advocate, I know this is herectical, but.... Megos are kind of a pain to play with--it takes a deft touch to stand them up and pose them, they don't hold their accessories great, and changing their outfits is a lot trickier than just snapping on a piece of Imaginext armor. To say nothing of the size problem and the vehicle/playset challenges it presents.

The problem with the Mego Knights is they are boring. Yes, as nicely sculpted as they are, they really are boring toys. Where is the princess to rescue, where is the old wizard, where are the dragons, where are the skeletons, cyclops and all those other cool fantasy monsters I saw in the Ray Harryhausen movies I watched and fantasy books I read? There's really nothing to do with them. They are boring.

Star Wars probably tops the list, and Superheroes of course.

Given the fact that most popular kids cartoon properties these days don't adhere to regular human proportions, tends to take away the generic production appeal of the Retro Cloth line. Many are better serviced with fully tooled sculpts that render the character better.

I'm not quite sure how a JLU or Brave and Bold license for example would translate to Mego without tooling up their own much wider bodies. Although Young Justice might fit the bill since they are much more regularly proportioned than their previous Teen Titans (Go!) counterparts.

Although Venture brothers has demonstrated their ability to mix and match parts for effect (Hulk body skinny legs).

Perhaps if more caricatured body parts were developed to mix and match?
