It would be interesting to find out why Two Face never showed up in cartoons until the 90s.
As far as I can tell, Filmation never used him. I was hoping to show that some cartoon did as an illustrative example to prove he could be in a cartoon. So maybe you're right - it was felt that he was too 'scary' for children, or damaging to our fragile and impressionable little minds, like the Human Torch.
And according to wikipedia, Challenge of the Superfriends couldn't use Joker in the Legion of Doom because Filmation had the rights to the character. Hanabarbera also had the Riddler and the Scarecrow, so the Riddler couldn't appear in the Filmation show. You must try to generate happiness within yourself. I think the retro figures should include characters from all sources...the more the better....Martian Man hunter and Captain Marvel are definite should do characters"Thats the ticket laddie"Comment

Two Face didn't show up in the cartoons of the 60s and 70s most likely because he wasn't used as a villain during most of the 1950s and 60s. Don't know if DC thought he was too grotesque looking when the Comics Code Authority came into power or what, but he had several appearances in the 1940s and then vanished for a long while.
O'Neil and Adams used him for the first time for a couple of decades in the early 1970s.The only reason the Torch was held out of the 1970's FF in favor of Herbie was due to the fact that Universal had him optioned for a tv show the same time they were doing the Hulk and Spidey. It had nothing to do with kids being stupid enough to light themselves on fire.
But kids are totally stupid enough to light themselves on fire. Some kids.Comment

While I am in favor of the SuperFriends characters being made, I also agree that all sources should be open as possibilities. In terms of the comics and the JLU series, I would like to see characters like Martian Manhunter, John Stewart GL, Captain Marvel and Plastic Man be made into retro Megos as well as Black Canary, Red Tornado, etc,
So I really hope Retro Megos are successful.
Cheers.Comment

The Spectre and the rest of the original Justice Society for me. As a kid I always loved that over sized reprint of them sitting around the table. Seriously and sadly though, I really don't think that round table will be complete. What kid would want a guy in gas mask? I'll be still be happy with Captain Marvel and Dr. Fate.Comment

I'll see what I can do.

I have never ever been "HIP" on DC characters that were not on the 70's TV shows, But DR. Fate, Martian manhunter, The Spectre, Plastic-Man, Professor Zoom, Trickster, and Mirror Master would ALL be welcome at my table!Comment

Personally I don't really care about getting all the Superfriends and could definitely do without these guys in particular: Black Vulcan , Apache Chief and Samurai... In fact, I hope this series is made more for people who like the comics and not just the tee-vee shows...
Grem--no disrespect to fans of the cartoons, though.Give us Golden Age Mego!!! Hourman! Golden Age Green Lantern, Jay Garrick would absolutely rock!sigpicComment

I think there are way more important characters to follow then some of the less unknown Super Friends heroes and foes. Sorry but The Wonder Twins or Samurai before Plastic Man,Dr. Fate or Spectre seems silly to me. The Legion Of Doom characters are nice but Giganta will never look good in Mego form. Gorilla Grodd seems like it wouldn't work either. Penguin and Joker are far more famous foes that would sell way better then some of the other bad guys from Super Friends. I like the theme of releasing the most famous foe with the hero (which seems the way they were going except for Batman/Two Face) there is room for many characters but for me personally to have Scarecrow or Riddler before Joker,Penguin or Catwoman just because they were on Super Friends seems weird. All that said I do hope rumors are true about Captain Cold and Cheetah coming. These two are Doom members I really want to see made. Solomon Grundy,Bizarro,Brainiac,Riddler and Scarecrow are also ones I'd eventually want to see too. However I don't want to see an entire line up of just Super Friends. I grew up on the show too,but I also grew up on the Batman 60's show and the old Filmation shows as well and Joker,Penguin and Catwoman mean alot to me too. Not just Riddler and Scarecrow just because they were Doom members.Comment

THing is. more folks likely know Samurai than Spectre, who's only appeared in a couple Brave & Bold episodes of late.
The retro line is, thus far, firmly based in the Mego era, and that was the era of Super Friends. And I have to say, even as a devout comics fan, I give the cartoon credit for something the comics didn't do at the time: bringing together the top guns of the baddies into one group to face the Justice League. Closest we got in the comics of the time was the second stringer dominated Secret Society of Super-Villains; Hanna-Barbera's LOD would have cleaned their clocks without working up a sweat. Back then, I kept hoping to see the Legion of Doom appear in the comics, even in the Super Friends book, but to no avail.
Really, it took until the recent Ross Justice series to genuinely see something like the Legion in the books. THere's a reason so many folks look back on that show so fondly despite its many shortcomings: the Legion of Doom was a great concept.Comment

but they were off limits due to the FILMATION BATMAN show.
(Please correct me someone if I'm wrong here!)
So...my take on this topic is, I think EMCE should focus on who was
most popular in the DCU "DURING THE MEGO ERA OVERALL".
That would mean characters like THE ATOM and PLASTIC MAN would/could
feasibly trump all the HB ethnic superheroes."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment

Well, I would love to see Atom, Black Lightning, & esp. Plastic Man.
But I'd also like Apache Chief & Samurai...
As long as they do characters from, say 1970-1981, I'll be happy!WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.Comment
