I WILL be buying all of them, as they are! They only way I'll stop buying is if they start making "modern" characters and weird "modern-era" costumes. Classic Mego-era costumes only, just as the line is. Judging from the looks of the prototypes for Wave 2, they certainly are intending on staying "classic" costuming...so I really don't see characters like Superman Blue or Superman Red in the line's future. I simply love them so far.
Guys, let's just keep buying them. There will always be whiners about everything... And Mattel... Just keep them coming! Wave 4, and 5 and so on... I look forward to a decent Richard Grayson Robin with no cow licks!
I happen to think the Mattel Retro Superman is one of the Best Looking Superman action figures ever. Its better then any of Hasbros executions....any of them.
I also think, in my opinion that it is more Superman then the Mego Superman....and believe me....the Mego Superman is my third favorite figure ever!
DC Comics reviews every sculpt and accessory we make. If they thought that
Superman did not look like Superman, they would have told us to change it.
Same for all the others too.
And there you have it...
I think the new Mattel figures are beautiful just the way they are. If they make some improvements to them, fine. If they don't, I'll still buy them. If the biggest problem you have in life is the boots or the hair on your Superman dolly, you don't really have any problems.
I really wish all the complainers would just go start their own toy companies. Then every figure would be perfect, right?
Luthor and Sinestro evoke the characters quite well, Luthor especially, but both Supes and GL don't. There's nothing in the Supes sculpt that would make me think Superman other than black hair (even the curl isn't really a spit curl); the original wasn't based on a specific artist's version, either, but I could still look at it and see Kal-El. And Hal's head is too big and stuck in a perpetual upward glance. Nothing even in the hairstyle makes it more than a guy with brown hair and Hal's mask. All the sculpts are soft, far more so than what we've seen in the other new Mego lines.
Certainly, we are all entitled to different opinions here. But Mego was able to pass Superman off as Don. I have a hard time imagining you'd ever be able to do something like that with the Mattel version, with that iconic curl (however well executed you think it is). It may not look like the Superman you were hoping for, but... it does look like Superman, right?
There you go confusing your opinion with facts again.
Who says the bodies are poorly made? All seven of my figures stand just fine.
They're from Mattel, so "poorly made" is almost a given these days. Mattel's quality control hit a all time low a couple years ago and they have overall risen back to the point of mediocrity on that count. And the Mego's show the same attention to quality. There are basic design problems, as well as the common problems with loose hips, several of which I have in the ones I bought. THe hip design itself is flawed, lacking enough surface area to really allow the figures to hold a pose solidly even if the bands were tight enough to do so. THere are significant, documented problems, including the peg in the hip that is blocking and causing the hump-back syndrome in mant of the figures. Poorly made seems an accurate description from the production side at least.
Who says the sculpts are "bad"? Whatever that means. They look good to me.

There are a lot of problems with this line I don't have with any of the other new Mego figures. I understand that the bodies had to be re-designed to satisfy whatever external or internal standards Mattel has, but the fact that the result has more problems than figures made decades ago doesn't speak well for the world's largest toy company.
When wave 1 arrived, Mattel told us that the thighs were too fat and
that would be addressed with wave 2 figures.
As for not knowing - do we really ever "know" anything?
See - I remembered the smile icon this time!

Any specifics as to what exactly would be fixed?
And if "anything" is fixed.. wouldn't that in fact make it a "new body 'version'"?
Seems this is a murky issue, that's being purposely left vague. Probably due to not knowing when, or if, any changes will be realized. (Which is kind of my initial point.)
I think we have had thirty plus years to discuss how we would have liked
to see certain characters made or re-made and now I am the guy - along
with my partner Joe, our guy at Mattel, and DC Comics' art director - who
is making those decisions.
Every customizer is doing that when they customize. We are all designers
of our own toy line.
At Mego Meet I will show you how we work through the process using
pre-visualizations. Don't miss it.
Dear DOC,
I hope this will be recorded for the Museum archives???
And TBolt? I spotted your agents long ago. I have my agents watching your agents.
Please gents, my agent's agents spotted those agents gents. They all are union after all.
Regarding the bodies: Averclose personal longtime friend told me why matell may have had issues in the first place with the mego bodies. They by design VIOLATE all sorts of standards and practices, (She is a fellow megohead) and mentioned this all because she is a toy designer for one of these companies. With the metal hooks and such, the body had to be re-imagnied and designed from scratch. So if you want to blame someone, Blame big brother, not Matell, or Doc. It's simply a liability issue for a company as big as Matell....
