Because Leia's bikini has been accepted by groups more varied than Nazis and other hate groups, and, essentially those who'd be offended by the bikini are NOT a "notably sized gender population" That's baloney. Nowhere near it. It's "fringe" comparatively.

And "objectifying" is based on opinion..... "symbol of hate-fueled aggression" is FACT ("can be" vs. "IS").

I could go on---but I truly believe me going on with a list of what I meant with my statement isn't as much "clarification" as it is just plain insulting to what should be viewed as the disparity itself IMHO.

Yeah, if it's all about "families" and cashing in on their dollars, they'll have to edit that out. Maybe Anakain can say "boo!" to them and scare them off.

Scoff now . . . with digital technology and increasingly oversensitive niche groups and a studio structure eager to seem forward-thinking, what they did in the special editions will be nothing compared to the tinkering that'll go on in releases of all sorts of favorites in upcoming years.

You may be right. It'll be an interesting experiment to see what they "need to change".
As long as we have the originals (and we do), they can tinker all they like.

I think just making them sit through the whole picnic scene in ATTACK OF THE CLONES would likely do the trick...
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Any conspiracy theorists thinking this was their way of clearing out all of the Star Wars Black Slave Leia peg hangers that have been clogging the shelves for the last couple of years?

As predicted, there has been a spike in sales and value on Slave Leia merch on ebay.

Personally I find it hilarious that any corporate entity or group finds this offensive when most women in entertainment objectify themselves. Kim Kardashian. Jennifer Lopez. Miley Cyrus. Amy Schumer.
They've made a freaking sport out of it. Who can wear the most outrageously revealing outfit? Who can have the most plastic surgery? Who can act like the biggest tramp or be the raunchiest? Then when people respond to it...they're "offended".

I hope they'll ban Jar Jar, so I can unload my Phantom Menace stuff at exagerated prices...

Personally, I think Carrie Fisher in that bikini is one of the few things that rocked in ROTJ!

This is Disney being PC and whitewashing OT material, knowing how that corporation rolls we can expect more.....

                      1. Leia is not a perfect character. But she is smart, independent, idealistic, a respected leader, good with a blaster... She is more than just the damsel in distress. She takes over her own rescue, for Pete's sake! I think it is a disservice to the character to reduce her to "sexy eye candy in a metal bikini."

                      2. In the movie, the scene kind of works. Jabba is all "sit there and look pretty"... he tries to degrade her, and she makes him pay for underestimating her. Because again, Leia is a badass. But that original message has been largely undone by wall posters, cosplayers, and yes, even toys, that remove the context and just focus on the titillation.

                      3. No argument that Carrie is hot in the metal bikini. And I think a female character can be sexy and still be a good female role model. But the scene where she is forced to wear the skimpy outfit against her will is not it.

                      4. I don't think there should be a complete embargo on the "slave Leia" representation. They make figures of every permutation of every minor character in Star Wars. But it is has become one of the dominant representations of the character, for an outfit she wore in one scene. A break seems entirely justified.

                      5. Imagine if the dominant Luke Skywalker figure was "Luke in Bacta Tank." No lightsaber. No clothes. Just a dude in his tighty whiteys. You'd probably feel like they short-changed a beloved character, too.

Let's not forget that even in that skimpy outfit, she still took out Jabba, and escaped. People should focus on that. So what if she wore a bikini...

My favorite look for Leia is still her Hoth outfit.

                          ^THIS.

Such a pretty lady, and really full of life. From photos like this, she seemed like a really fun person to have on the set.
