Modern toys/collectibles quality vs. price RANT

That's it. I have officially had it.
I couldn't wait to buy a house and finally have my toy room that I'd always dreamed of, but you know, this hobby just isn't fun anymore.
The collector driven market has priced most vintage stuff right out of reach for many collectors, including myself, so that leaves us with new stuff, which has now become equally overpriced and the quality is just absolute CRAP.
I mean...is it me? Are my expectations just too high? I spent $467 BEFORE shipping this month on collectibles, and all four of the items I bought are CRAP.

I bought a sealed Titan Merchandising Christopher Lee Dracula bust for $150 with two painted over factory chips, bristles, dirt and smudges in the paint, and black overspray on his FACE. HOW did this thing leave the factory?

Next there was the ultra rare Pink Cowl Batman Wacky Wobbler...also $150 and sealed. The silver base is COVERED with glue, he's got lumpy, sloppy paint all over and yellow on his boots.

Then there was the Gentle Giant Jumbo Secret Wars Hobgoblin. The thing is only TWO COLORS and they couldn't even get that right. Again, all kinds of dirt stuck in the orange paint.

Last was a Clash of the Titans Calibos Mask that is too horrible for words. I'll let the picture speak for it self.
And the worst part about THAT one is the response. The copy used to sell it had a $200 hair job, and the actual mask has a $50 hair job. I asked, how ethical is that? Isn't that bait and switch?

Bottom line, I'm sick and tired of plunking down my hard earned money for JUNK, especially for the prices these companies are selling this stuff for. We've all heard the horror stories about $300+ Hot Toys figures falling apart, flaking paint, disintegrating rubber, etc.

I had to buy THREE NECA 18" Batmans. The first two broke right out of the package, and these things were $90 EACH!!

I've just had it...it's become painfully obvious if I want it done right I gotta do it myself. The nicest pieces in my collection are the ones I built and painted. I'm sticking to my plastic model kits from now on and that's it. As for the rest...I'm out. I refuse to keep supporting all these various companies and their ever increasing prices, while quality continues to decline.

Check out these pics...bear in mind between those two items alone, that's almost $200 of my money.

I'm VERY selective these days about what I go after in the big ticket arena. I have essentially shuddered my business with Hot Toys and Sideshow. The novelty of getting a good sculpt is fading because other companies are picking up the quality and doing better work on the lower priced items. So competition has made my interest in Hot Toys wane considerably. With regard to other items that are not of the figure realm, I tend to do allot of research before buying them. I can't tell you how many times Amazon reviews and Youtube have saved me from a bad purchase. I wouldn't dive out of the hobby. Just recalibrate your research before dropping the bills. These days if I'm dropping good money, I try to put allot of effort into having an informed expectation from reviews. I don't trust how anything gets marketed anymore and I have too big a pile to go on pure emotion these days. Don't be afraid to perform the sniff test before buying.

Well, the good news is, I'm about to make a lot of collectors VERY happy when I start selling off my stuff.

That stinks. I know the feeling, vintage collecting isn't any easier. I got a mego star trek enterprise and crew and they all reeked of smoke then of the few carded WGSH I got for a good price Both Batman and Robin came in with broken knees . Then I went to sell Funko pops and ebay said the box would cost $4.54 to ship which came out $10.99 at the post office.

I've almost stopped buying new stuff. The difference between the proto photos and actual product is sometimes just too much.
People should be sending all this stuff back with a "this isn't what I ordered" note.
One of the last things I bought was the Neca 8" Taylor, which was very disappointing. Had to make a new flight suit from scratch. I'm not buying finished product and then getting something I need to rebuild and repair.
Would you take a car that you needed to respray from day 1 and had wobbly wheels and faulty brakes? No. That's not what you paid for.

My advice to you: you are a gifted artist. Make your own collectibles. You have all the skills to make them perfect.

Thank you, and yep, that's the plan. I'm gonna focus solely on Aurora model kits from now on. I loved them as a kid and still do. First model I ever built was Aurora's Mummy.

What about "Jekyll and Hyde Together Again" and the "The Jerk, Too"?

Jekyll and Hyde Together Again was a biggie. Never experienced The Jerk, Too.

I dislike the fragility of some of the high end figures or statues. I don't expect them to take a 4 year old bashing them, but I can't tell you how many Sideshow figures have come apart in my hands with normal collector handling. No, the prices don't match what you get for a lot of this garbage.

Some of those models I built as a 10 year-old look better than a lot of new factory released products anyway.
