Mattel brings back Super Powers!?

I'm still reeling from this relatively small but nicely notable addition to the Mattel DCUC 6 inch stuff--- as far as the repaints, I'm most happy for the more offbeat ones---but, as I am a "bronze age" type collector, it's starting to sink in how cool it is that Myxie is finally being added to this line. I have a nice enough bronze age spandex in-scale version of him from some DC Direct line, but this one looks like a better face sculpt and appears to have more articulation too.
Makes me wish they woulda took at stab at another notable bronzey exclusion, a circa 1984-era Bizarro---no one's ever made a 6 inch scale Bizarro that seems to capture that bronze age vibe that could fit in so well with all the others that do so in the line. Only a face sculpt tooling woulda been needed, really."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment

These look great, but that pricetag is waaay too high. They overestimate what many fans will be willing to pay for these. When the line fails, they'll say there wasn't sufficient interest, rather than admit they priced them too high.Comment

so... do the figures actually have "Super Powers"? The whole point of the original line was that they had "Super Powers" action when you squeezer their legs or whatever. That was the charm of that line for me.
Not sure why a couple of years later, Toy Biz replaced the elegant way the punches, kicks, spins, etc were executed by using visible levers and wind up knobs instead. Particularly since they were using the same sculpts.Comment

Wow... alotta misconceptions here, and some despite obvious factors....
Just like another online product, their MOTUC line, they deliberately do not add action features that were present in the original line that inspired the new line (MOTU) because adults aren't expected to demand action features over a lower price point.
If you guys dislike the price NOW... you'd dislike it more if there were action features involved as would the adult MOTU fans regarding the MOTUC line and the same issue.
Actually, (in the context of Mattel eking out more Matty exclusive DCUC) it requires a LOT of new sculpting.
Doing a whole new figure (Myxie), the figure I raved about in my previous post, makes it night and day as far as sculpting/tooling costs for this 'Super Powers anniversary" release. What would've been virtually nothing new (sans packaging), is now, "Hey, let's add a whole new figure to the line", and this choice boosts the costs significantly.
And I assume the reason they went through the trouble adding Myxie, was because that newly tooled figure could go a long way in justifying the whole set of figures and keeping certain people from musing "This line is underwhelming with absolutely no fully-new figures in it."
That absolutely won't happen, because as mentioned above it's not really a "line", so it can't really "fail"---it's a nice gesture on Mattel's part to perpetuate the fizzling DCUC format and celebrate Super Powers at the same time... in other words, to dribble out a few new figures, the "Super Powers anniversary" angle is the "excuse" this quarter."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment

I can't imagine many Mxy enthusiasts or DCUClassics fans are going to be too excited over this "figure"--the photos seem to indicate it's molded in a seated position with three-point articulation (neck & shoulders). Not very comparable to other DCUC, and I wouldn't say Mattel is over-extending themselves with it or any others in this line.
As a representative character in your collection, Hue, it's admittedly much better than the DCDirect "Vengeance" Mxy (if that's what you have now). But it's underwhelming to me.
And ironically, the "new" Riddler is off-model from the original South American knock-off. What's the worth of a tongue-in-cheek homage if the paint details which in fact are the whole point are inaccurate?Last edited by PNGwynne; Feb 18, '14, 9:42 PM.WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.Comment

The gold superman variant is cool since it was prototyped and proposed as a variant... not sure we need the mismatched colour on the Riddler to evoke the Super Amigos. I think knowing it's a repaint Green Lantern is enough. I'd even be cool with having the ring sculpt still there.
I hope at least they would do the glow eyes feature if they do Darkseid. I assume it wouldn't break the bank to do a light pipe in the head, especially if he's an oversized figure right?Comment

MATTEL would only be offering these six figures and no other, so Darkseid is out of the equation. That's why I'll not be getting these because I would have loved to display all of my DCUC super heroes in a Super Powers card as well...Comment
