Maybe it's just me, and maybe it's because I haven't seen the new ST film, but the new ST movie-related figures and accessories strike me as two kinds of efforts to get around likeness and licensing payments.
First, the figures (with the exception of the new and 'original' Spocks) seem like they've been crafted to avoid paying the TOS actors likeness fees. Now, when I buy a Kirk figure, I want it to look like William Shatner and when I buy a McCoy figure, I want it to look like DeForest Kelley, etc.
As for the props (phaser and tricorder), they look like some kind of unlicensed knockoff you'd see in the 70s with names like "Space Journey Fase Gun" and "Space Journey Multi-corder". You know, similar, but not close enough (in the minds of the manufacturers) to be actionable.
Maybe when (and if) the new feature(s) become near and dear to my heart like TOS, I'll have more enthusiasm for these toys, but I just can't get into them at this point.
I always wished Playmates would have made a Star Trek 3 phaser.
It was my fav movie phaser -- I think because it most reminded me of the classic series one.
Can someone post a pic of the STIII Phaser? I don't recall it.
Also, I have a few Playmates Phasers and one of them definitely has a removeable Type one and some Sound FX and I thought it was very well done.
I'll check though and maybe post a pic or two. I never bought an Art Asylum one.
Art Asylum is coming out with a Tricorder though I think. Anyone know if it will be "undersized" or will it be properly scaled? I think Playmates released a shrunken Tricorder which I have but it is Very Irritating. I'd like one made to the proper 100% scale. Is that 1:1?
