DC Direct: History of the DC Universe Figures

    Coming June '09:

If they can keep these up, I'll be after every wave! All based on George Perez' artwork. Yes the obligatory Batman but a first for Manhunter and Blue Devil. Silver Age Green Arrow has been done before but only as part of the boxed set with Speedy.

    That's interesting.

I'm basically only into circa 1970s characters/costume designs
---I recognize that MANHUNTER from the SSOSV comics I have...cool

Green Arrow should have short sleeves.

Not being a huge comicbook fan, I could never keep up with all the looks
of characters over issue to issue ---case in point:
I have an issue of GREEN LANTERN/GREEN ARROW
where GREEN ARROW is clean shaven and has a smaller
mask but still has the newfangled 70s costume---weird.

Hero costumes and images are so dodgy like that.

            And...
It was only after years of seeing Grey Hulk and Yellow Daredevil
customs that I finally realized that those versions of those
characters weren't around in the comics for long at all
yet they are highly celebrated by fans...and toy collector fans at that.

These have a twinge of Perez to them, but I don't feel they are overly close to his work. That Green Arrow seems off, even if his sleeves were right. Looks like they just reused Batman's body.

Why can't DCD just make a frickin' Neal Adams Batman already?

I'm assuming the packaging will feature artwork by Perez. Everything is supposed to be based on his artwork from the "History of the DC Universe" mini/hardcover. Did his GA have long sleeves? I'm too lazy to look.

They should give Adams his due with a little set...Batman, Ra's Al Ghul, Joker and Two-Face would be a nice foursome.

I've read and re-read the History of the DCU over and over, and I think beardless Ollie gets one drawing, where they introduce several of the SA heroes, and he's got the short sleeves, and loose fitting shirt like he should.

Good call. Why they haven't done this yet is beyond me.

Frankly, they havent done a Neal Adams Batman...because of Neal Adams. The amount of money he wants from DCD to have his name associated with the figures is crazy.
Regaurding the Perez Bats...I think it's a pretty close look to Perez's Batman.....especially the head/mask. I love this figure!

That was one of my favorites when I was collecting DCD figures. DCD Direct had some great figures but in the end the scale really killed it for me. Why couldn't DCD make all of their figures in scale?

I loved the Perez Crisis figures and these certainly look great. I might just have to pick up Manhunter when it is released. 8 years late but we finally got one!

Just pointing out that that Manhunter was actually a clone of Paul Kirk, the good Manhunter. He died when he "killed" Darkseid in SSOSV.

What was the deal with the Paul Kirk Manhunter that bought it in Detective? Was he the original Golden Age character or the Earth 1 counterpart?

He was the Golden Age DC Manhunter (not to be confused with the Quality Comics Manhunter of the Golden Age).

"Paul Kirk had been killed by an elephant on safari in the 1940s, but his body had been cryogenically preserved and eventually resurrected by the Council, a secret society dedicated to controlling the world. After his return from death, Kirk was given a healing factor devised by a geneticist-member of the Council and was trained extensively in the martial arts by Asano Nitobe. He was also the genetic source for many clones, which the Council intended to use as their paramilitary arm, with the original Paul Kirk as their leader."

Paul Kirk turned against the Council and battled his clones. Another clone, Kirk DePaul, was used in Kurt Busiek's POWER COMPANY series. Supposedly the last evil clones were all killed in the wordless bonus story in the MANHUNTER tpb that collected the original run.
