top 5 coolest/lamest viewmasters

I found an old Banana Splits one at a local thrift show a while back and lacking any pocket change hid it in some books I didn't think anyone would be interested in, of course I forgot about them and by the time I remembered they were gone. I really dig the Kroft stuff of the 70's and can't believe I didn't hide them better, like in one of the many 70's microwave cookbooks that remain there now and forever.

I heard something from a viewmaster expert/collector many years ago.

He said, all viewmaster shots are staged on the set just so the VM cameras can catch the 3-D images.

Example, when Omega Glory was being filmed, after the scenes were filmed, they had to go back and do the scene over again in a frozen position.

This was done with EVERTHING live, including movies and TV shows.

Thought that was interesting .....

One notable View Master reel is Land of the Giants --- which contains completely different angles than the ones we see on TV.

I think that's just basic protocol with every movie---making "stills",
I'm thinking? (for promo and archiving and other stuff I think)

I have a few of the new and old Viewmaster reels ranging from tv, movies, horror classics (I have the Frankenstein and Dracula reels), superheroes and vacation spots (Grand Canyon, etc.). I like the older ones with the booklets the best since some had puzzles. I got the DC Super Heroes set as a kid. The reels and viewer survived but the can is a little beat up.

I find reels at the local thrift stores every once in a while and I pick them up when I can. My recent purchase was the Flash Gordon set titled "The Planet Mongo" from 1976.

My kids love them. Regardless of the multimedia world, you sometimes just can't beat a cool 3-D picture!

I had a cool animated Godzilla set, fun stuff. We all also had a bunch of disney ones with what looked like stuffed animals ... they were creepy.


My older sister had an Electra Woman and it was creepy with that Spiderlady villian ... we had the projector thing for them and my sister would set it on that darn Spiderlady picture and chase my around the house with it. My mom would come in from from the other room to find me crying in the corner with my eyes shut. any my sister sitting there with the VM hidden behind her

Had the Batman tv series and KISS. great stuff!

I vividly recall Batman (TV, with Julie Newmar's Catwoman) as well as Mighty Mouse and Peanuts.

bonanza that's great reminds me of the billy martin card when he was a manager for the tigers. i would love to find the fantastic four view master.
