If not I can imaging a lot of kids being disappointed when they opened it for the first time.

No wetsuit or diving suit. Came exactly as you seem him there. Same goes for the regular Adventurer, shows a pilot parachuting out. But what you got was a Joe in a white t-shirt, tan pants and a tan cap. Below is a picture of one of my 1969 Adventurer's. The standard box looked exactly the same but came without the obvious sticker this one has.

And the box art has a white guy, but the text and actual figure are black. Got to love that. I'd have been irked as a kid to only get that modest outfit when the Fantastic Free Fall outfit and accessories is on the solid box.

But wow, that's another great piece there. I have the AT Adventurer, which is the AT black guy, and he's not common. But the -69 one is a real tough find.

Back in the day (mid 70's) I always wanted a black Joe but I could never find any in the store.

Were they far and few in the burbs ? ... Or did my store just didn't have much of a selection ?

I think they were short packed all around. I was told the painted hair version from 1965-1969 wasn't even available in Canada.

Here's a picture of the Sears version on the right. Later in the 1969 run they ran short on the white t-shirt, tan cap and pants, and substituted the Soldiers of the World French Resistance Fighter sweater, pants and beret. There was a note in the box that mentioned the change.
