If you want to open a carded or boxed item then sell the carded/boxed item you have to someone who values it in that state and buy a loose piece. You are destroying something that is very rare and is of value to someone else when you open vintage carded/boxed items and destroying a truly unique collectable, as carded/boxed items are harder and harder to find and are a little time warp back to the past.

I see Hot Wheels guys do this all the time to perfectly good carded vintage red lines and I think it's such a screwed up thing to do, just to pretend you managed to preserve a perfectly good loose mint red line in your collection.

The carded/boxed item has a place too, and many who would prefer it in that state. Again, there are plenty of loose items around if you want them.

Nope. I enjoy the experience of being the first person to open a vintage toy, apply the labels, etc. That's part of the experience for me, and no MOC or MIB collector is going to take that away. It's my money, it's my purchase, and I'm gonna do what I want with it. I find MIB especially stupid unless it's a window box. You can't even see what's inside! I'm a TOY collector, not a box collector.

good on you for your outlook on toy collecting. I could never bring myself to do what you do.

I know one thing.... you are not allowed in my toy room ever!

I should clarify a bit...if I have a mint card or box, I'm not gonna destroy it to open it, but I have no problem opening damaged cards and boxes. Can I come over now?

I still operate by the old rules of MIB collecting. If you open it, and have all the contents mint, it's still MIB. I know with the advent of things like CGA and the like, this is probably frowned upon by some. That's another reason I have no problem opening my Hot Toys. All my vintage Batman vehicles from 89 on are opened, and the vehicles are mostly on display, but I have the boxes stored.

I got one for you, just for fun. I see that you love mailer items so say you get a mailer batman (as the one in auction watch) but it is sealed shut. Do you open it to see if there's a batman actually in there or leave it as is and display it as a brown box hoping that there's a never been touched or seen batman inside?

If I collected MIB and vintage carded figures, I would LOVE it when others opened their cards. It can only make my collection go up in value.

I don't collect MIB however. If tearing the package open makes it more fun, then go for it.

I have a collecting/making money mentality so anytime I buy something I want to make sure I can make my money out of it if I need to.

I can't do that if I open the item up
exactly, I think the exact same way..if that's the case just sell the sealed one and buy a loose one much much cheaper and at the same time you're helping a collector get a sealed one that he needs for his collection

I say open them all, that way it makes the carded ones all the more rare and valuble for those of us who keep them moc!

I take practically everything off the card. I have no plans of ever selling my collection, so I'm not worried about the drop in value. However, what I do is that I buy the figure loose, complete and mint, and then once I've done that, I'll try to track it down MOC. But at least I like to have one of each figure loose. It makes more sense to find it carded and then a loose figure, since it's usually harder finding it on the card.
I am more than machine. More than man. More than a fusion of the two.

I advocate opening & enjoying items.

Of course, I do not collect high-end MOC Megos as an investment. I have no qualms about opening less-expensive ones or ones on lesser cards.
