    Opening Vintage MOC

Do you have a problem with opening vintage figures? I asked this same question awhile ago on the Star Wars forum. To say that the vast majority of SW collectors do not take kindly to it is an understatement.

For some reason, I do not care much for MOC. If I had something on a dead mint card, I would not consider opening it. But I see no problem with it when it comes to beater cards.

I recently started to watch old Star Trek episodes on netflix and found I really like it. I'd like to have a complete mint set of the Mego figures.

I saw this Uhura and thinking about buying her to open, maybe AFA even as loose.

I see no problem opening a carded figure at all unless maybe the figure or card its self is rare. AFA in my opinion is a complete waste of time and money. To each thier own though.

      >Do you have a problem with opening vintage figures?

No. I very much prefer loose figures, so taking them off the card is a neccessity. I'll look for loose ones first though, 'cos they're usually cheaper.

      >To say that the vast majority of SW collectors do not take kindly to it is an understatement.

No kidding! Them guys get disturbingly hostile when someone unwraps a figure.

People on rebelscum are nutjobs. They take collecting Star Wars to a whole new level and it can get ridiculous.

I would never open a MOC figure, but that is just me. I like the idea of the toy being mint even if it is on a beater card.

how people collect and display their toys is on them. What is fun about collecting if you don't do what you want.

Toys are meant to be played with. So I completely understand wanting to get them off the card. But there are also some super minty figures out there that are already loose. So my preference would be to find one that works for me that is already loose, and only consider liberating one from card if I couldn't find a suitable loose alternative.

Cards I leave as is, boxes I open. however, the last unopened box I bought was a Power Lords Beast Machine and I promptly broke it into bits trying to free him from his cardboard prison.

I have mixed feelings on this, and odd standards. Back in the early 90s I bought a Mego Batman and Spider-Man, each on 1979 French-language Pin-Pin cards. Because both my loose Mego Batman and Spidey were really beaten up, I eventually opened them. If I found them now, I don't think I could do that, but it's much easier to find a nice, loose Mego figure thanks to the internet.

I have at least 10 or 12 Rubbermaid totes full of MOC Batman/DC figures from the 90s. Most aren't worth much now, but I also bought ones to open if I really liked the figure, so I'll probably never open those, especially my BTAS figures.

When I buy new stuf...I open it. I used to keep everything MOC, but I ran out of wall space to display them. I did have shelf space however, so I had a massive opening party once upon a time. I think what really put me over was DC Direct. Their packaging was hit or miss, and wasn't very consistent, and the cards were HUGE. Their figures were expensive, running $15-$18 back in the early 2000s, even when similar styled mass retail figures (Marvel Legends) were still under $8 a piece. It seemed a waste to buy so many pricey items and not enjoy them, so I just had to free them. And I've never really looked back.

Back in '88 or '89 I bought a complete set of Fantastic Four from Lionel Playworld in Atlanta and opened them when I got back home that night. I never had the FF as a kid, it was the first time I had seen them in person and it was like I was 10 all over again. After playing with them a while I added them to childhood loose collection. Today I doubt I could open a mint carded set, especially since they have value and you can find loose ones pretty easily. I did, however, open a carded Chopper from Starsky & Hutch a few years ago as I needed a loose one to complete my set. It was on a real beater card so I didn't think twice. That's the last carded Mego I set free.

I don't have a problem opening Playmates Treks or DC Directs or Marvel Legends. I don't really think of them as "vinatge" even though some are 20 years old.

I was at five below yesterday, and they had star wars figures for $5. I thought about buying some of them, but couldn't decide if I could open them or not. And that is brand new figure. I could never open a vintage-carded item.

For me it's all about what I pay and what it is. If it's carded and I paid a vintage MOC price, then I wouldn't remotely consider taking it out. Why pay the price for a pristine specimen when you could buy it loose? Now if it's a new product, I don't care. I will take it out. These days though if it's carded, I have developed my own unique way of getting them out without destroying the case, so I can still put figures back in and hang them up.

I have no problem w/ opening a toy, whether it's in a box or on a card. Like Sprytel said, toys are meant to be played with. If you wanna keep the bubble, you can glue it back on. I wouldn't sell it that way w/o telling the new owner it was previously opened.

Hot Toys are too expensive to leave in a box, IMHO. To me it's like dropping $200 on a box. A pretty box, but a box. I love looking up from my couch and seeing mini-Chris Reeve flying in my case.

Resealed items annoy me to no end! Especially megos and star wars toys. You just killed the value of the toy. My opinion of course

I have a collecting/making money mentality so anytime I buy something I want to make sure I can make my money out of it if I need to.

I can't do that if I open the item up
