    Remco Monsters Prototypes

I am lucky enough to know the owner of these original factory pulls of the 9" Remco Creature from the Black Lagoon and Phantom of the Opera figures. It's also advantageous that he brought them over to my house last spring and let me photograph them.

From the collection of the line's sculptor, the difference between the test pulls and detail lost in the glow plastic is staggering. Some fun close ups after the jump:

The Creature shows a great deal of detail lost, when I first saw it I worried it wasn't the same figure but it is.

    Kissing cousins.

As much as I love the Remco Monsters, the Phantoms glow plastic and paint job really spoiled a nice head sculpt.

    "I can't believe we're related"

Many thanks to my buddy for allowing me to document these amazing items and hopefully in the future, we'll get to see the rest of the Remco Monster Squad...

Oh wow, now that I see nice big pics of them, I can't believe how much detail these have. Those are really great sculpts. Glow in the dark is really fun, but I can't help but wonder how these figures would have turned out if Remco went for non-glow, nicely painted versions. Great stuff!

Awesome but, wow, it really did lose a lot of detail there.

If I understand correctly, this is common with soft vinyl heads. the hollow cast and the way it continues to to grow from the original mold often looses a large amount of detail and changes in shape. Add rooted hair and the whole sculpt can streach to awful proportions. I'm not sure that painted differently, the rubber heads would look as good as the prototypes. Better? Yes, but those prototypes have details and design, solid resin casts could capture far better.

Those are vinyl test pulls from the head mold, so they've captured a lot of the detail.

I stand connected. I thought they were the original sculpts. Thanks.

Nah, I wish. I do know that the original sculptor was very upset about the use of the glow plastic and now I can see why.

These make me wonder how detail is routinely lost in the final production run (at least back in the 70's). Just look at the detail lost between the original Superman sculpt and the final product-

That would have been funnier if I knew how to attach the pics in the proper size. Seriously, these are uber cool and do really give insight into the process.

Wow, the detail is amazing. I still love the Remcos, but they could have looked even better.
