Its a new sculpt.
And Crimson Ghost, you have to remember, the concept of a hero who can become any other hero was unique to cap in the 60's. The only other 12" figure was GI Joe and he was, at the time strictly military. There were no other super hero figures to have at all. Not to mention that the idea of Ideal getting licensing from DC, Marvel and others was unprecedented.
I can't wait to see all that they offer.
I like the new headsculpt (or is it just a new paint scheme on the old sculpt?). It keeps the Captain's look but addresses some of the complaints leveled against him over the years. He doesn't look worried anymore, just determined!
Chris
That's a very good point. It could be the exact same head sculpt, just painted to the Nth degree for Toy Fair and other advance product shots.
If I had time I would hunt down PM's first version Cap Action and compare it with this updated version. PM/R2 doesn't really like to spend for updates to existing products. They mostly like to "re-package" earlier stuff they've done. Don't get me wrong they do new stuff, but they love to go back the the well quite a bit.

I know this as well. That is the reason, IMHO, that Mego was so successful. Instead of having a guy dressed as Superman, I had Superman himself. And furthermore, I could also have Batman at the same time. I wouldn't have to take off the Superman costume and put on the Batman costume. Because how many Captain Action dolls would a kid in the 60's have at one time? Maybe 2, but more likely they had CA and Dr. Evil and more costumes than figures.
I have to say of all the Captain Action figures from the original to now, I am absolutely in LOVE with this new sculpt. I think this one is the best. And that's with all due respect to all others that have come before. Their all good. But this baby is spot on cool. I'm pumped to get this one. And to think I have to wait until this fall! YAAAAH!!!

I like Captain Action as Captain Action.
I like CA as himself too but I was 8 years old when CA came out in 1966 and I was absolutly thrilled that he could be turned into Superman, Batman and others! You would have to have been a kid back then to understand. Yes, I had only 1 CA at a time and several outfit sets, so GI Joe would wear some of them ( did not fit him well though), because my CA was SM most of the time and AB was Superboy! CA was the very first superhero AF and to be able to change him into the superheroes I liked was awesome!
If I was younger I would have missed out on CA and would haved loved having the mego WGSHs in the 70's.
But I agree with you- CA is GREAT as himself!
But I don't like the new face sculpt-I like the original and the one PM did in the Flash Gorden outfit- the paint sculpt on him was nice- better then the one that followed in the retro box! You had to get CA as Flash Gorden to get the CA figure with that paint sculpt! I hope this new one is only a proto-type and the actual figure will look better. Otherwise he does not look like CA to me.

Hey , Joe Ahearn fro CA Enterprises here-- Just to clarify, this IS a brand new head sculpt!
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
Isn't the Captain Action in the current run of comics supposed to be the son of the original Captain Action? Is the new head sculpt supposed to represent him?
