New info direct from the folks at CA Enterprises:

Round 2 corporation is the company putting them out in fall of 2011.
Most of the releases will be through Toys R US, but they will be
putting out exclusive versions of some suits for specialty shops via
    Diamond.

So the 2010 date posted by Julius Marx is inaccurate, which confirms my suspicions regarding the Playing Mantis and Toy Biz pieces we see incorporated into the prototypes.

Round 2 is essentially Playing Mantis reborn. Interesting...

      Cool, thanks for the info.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Didn't PM have something to do with Polar Lights at one time? I think I have seen both labels on some Aurora repops in the past.

Thanks for the info from CAE!
I had a feeling they probably would be made by Round 2! Tom Lowe- the owner of Playing Mantis owns Round 2.
It is great that 12" CA figures and uniform sets will be produced again and on sale nation wide at TRU, and comic book shops!
I am not a Marvel fan, I was hoping for DC uniform sets. But I will try to get Spiderman and Captain America. Captain Action should do very well with these popular character sets.
But in one photo I don't like how his head is on the neck. I wish Round 2 would use the same molds they used for the PM figures, which were very similar to the Ideal ones.
I do not want a swap-a-head version of CA. Captain Action has always used masks and uniforms and that's how it should be. I will be very dissapointed if they are using removable heads instead of masks.
Hopefully they will also re-release Action Boy and Dr. Evil and uniform sets for them too. ( Action Boy could finally be Bucky!). And I hope they go beyond the Marvel characters as well.
I got my first CA when I was 8 and I loved playing with him as CA or changing him into Superman, Batman, Green Hornet, Spiderman or Aquaman. I also had Action Boy and the Superboy set for him.
Captain Action was a big success when introduced in 1966. He was the closest competition to Hasbro's GI Joe . Millions of CA figures and sets were sold between 1966-68. The reason he was cancelled in 1968/69 was due to the popularity of superhero toys dropping off sharply at that time. Sales for GI Joe also were way down at that time due to parent's anti-war sentiments.
Ideal also had a complicated and expensive licensing arrangement with DC , Marvel, King Features and others and chose not to renew these arrangements for 1969. It's a shame they could not forsee that in 1972 superhero toys would again be in high demand.
I loved how poseable and realistically sculpted Captain Action was. He remains my all-time favorite toy.
It's better that 12" Captain Action won't be out till next fall! Hopefully by then I will be in a much better financial situation and will be able to afford to collect the new series, as well as future CA figures by Castaway!

Yes! Polar Lights was owned by Playing Mantis! Now Polar Lights is owned by Round 2- same company, different name!

Just a theory at this point.....I wouldnt read too much into anything yet. I'm sure press releases are coming that will let us know for sure. Until then we're all just guessing!

Cool news, but I will only be happy if they make a Green Goblin outfit...and classic 70's Green Goblin only.

I Heard from Ed Catto that CA will have masks just like the original!
                      The hands will be interchangeable.
And they are working on getting the DC license too!
This is going to be great!

Can't wait to get a Spidey set for my son!
If they figured out a way to do a Hulk set, he would explode!!
