    Happy 40th She-Ra

2025 is the 40th anniversary of She-Ra. I feel very old.

A very brief and very shortened bit of history. This is all public info. Interviews, Power Con videos, etc.

She-Ra was developed because Mattel's internal researched showed 30 percent of MOTU fans/collectors were girls. Which was unprecedented for the time. Teela was also selling very well. Much higher than they ever expected. A market was obviously there, and they knew they had to develop a girl He-Man or their competition certainly would. Like Galoob eventually did with Golden Girl.

Due to Teela's popularity the early plans were to make a new Teela figure or Teela like character. Very early development started in the "boys team" and had not gotten past a Teela like character, complete with snake headdress, before it was moved to the "girls team. " Opinions differ and I'm sure some on the boys team felt like the project was stolen. Another opinion is the project was moved to the girls team because Mattel felt there wasn't anything, yet they could really successfully market. Because it's not just girls they have to sell to but also mothers and retailers.

Mattel designer Justine Dantzer refined the Teela like character into more of what would actually become She-Ra. She-also created most of the first wave characters like Bow, Kowl and Catra. A lot of her ideas came from her earlier Princess of Power like Andromeda concept. Mattel designer Noreen Porter then further refined the designs to what would eventually become the action figures. Filmation was also heavily involved in the final development. He-Ra, like the Greek goddess, was one of the preliminary names for She-Ra. Filmation writer Larry Ditillio came up with the name She-Ra and along with J. Micheal Straczynski created the cartoon backstory. And the rest is history more or less.

There are like a whole bunch of She-Ra variations. Paint, sticker, fabric, etc. Here are the major ones I have. Made in Taiwan, made in China, no country stamped, Spain release.

    sheravariations.jpg

I think the made in Taiwan doll is the prettiest. The made in China has paler make up. The unmarked one has the wider head sculpt variation later used on the Starburst She-Ra variant. The Spanish one is a lot different looking with a softer detailed head sculpt and brighter gold.

She-Ra 40th anniversary figure. She finally looks like the cartoon, Yay!

      she-ra40th.jpg

I also like they included the up/down wrist joint on her right hand so she can do the "For the honor of Grayskull!" pose.

They did actually release one Princess of Power figure in the 2002 MOTU line. But only as a convention exclusive. Made using the Teela body mold. I like that they went to the extra effort and gave her rooted hair.

I do think the 2002 toy line and cartoon would have certainly benefited with the Horde and Rebellion over the Snake Men.

1985 Princess of Power Kowl the know-it owl.

          she-rakowl.jpg

          US and Spanish release.

It's challenging to get a Kowl in really nice condition. His peach fuzz type flock does not hold up well and his action feature is very delicate. You are supposed to ask Kowl a question and then you lift up his chest panel to get the answer. Red means no, yellow means maybe and green means yes. This is often broken. I have four Kowls and only one still works.

I never followed She-Ra, but 40 years just seems like another life time. You have a nice collection and obviously have kept them in nice well kept condition, congrats.

It does really seem like another time and world away.

I was so into MOTU, I bought the first wave of She-Ra figures without blinking. Then I realized how...girlie they were. I know that's not very progressive of me now, but 10 year old me was kind of embarassed by them after I bought them. My friends were kind of suspect too, honestly, which only made it worse. I had no problem owning female G.I. Joe figures or Wonder Woman from the Super Powers line. It was the rooted hair, brushes and fabric skirts that did me in. Again, not very forward-thinking of me, but I was a boy of the times.

But they have managed to survive along with most of my childhood MOTU collection, and I have them on display now, even though they are far from mint and nowhere near as nice-looking as your colleciton, Werewolf. It's a really nice looking set of figures. As an adult I can appreicate that the line was very colorful, imaginative, and well-made. And very important to a whole generation of kids.

I really need to pick up that new Filmation-style figure. I always wished that the She-Ra figure looked more like that design.

I think that's awesome you still have them! So, try not to be judgmental of 10-year-old you. After all you did keep them all these years.

Netossa from the third and final Princess of Power wave from 1987.

Mine is missing the fabric headpiece which I am not terribly fussed about because she didn't wear it in the cartoon.

Entrapta from the 1986 wave of Princess of Power.

                      sheratentrapta.jpg

Entrapta along with Catra are the only two villain characters in the entire line. Entrapta can be a little challenging to collect because once her long braids are undone, her hair can turn into a real mess. My Entrapta still has her original factory hair style, but the vintage rubber bands have long since disintegrated and have been replaced.

Swift Wind from the first POP series from 1985.

A very iconic and beloved toy. It's ridiculous there hasn't been a Swift Wind in Origins yet. Hopefully this year.

Buried in my collection are my original She-Ra and Golden Golden Girl collection. My Mom made use give away our MOTU to a family that had boys who didn't have toys to play with (also they got religious). So we boxed the POP and my parents forgot about them. It wasn't until I got back from the military that I discovered the box was still in my childhood bedroom closet.

Growing up my brother and I didn't care if they were girl toys then again he played more with the MOTU while my have of the room was POP.

Probably one of the more unusual toys in the POP collection and yes, it is exactly what it looks like. It's a giant swan mount with troll hair and she is glorious. Perfuma is standing by her for scale to show just how large the toy is.

I had some Golden Girl toys. A few figures and the castle which I had gotten really cheap at TRU. Sadly, I got rid of them in a move along time ago.
