Mattel Clash of the Titans Catalog

Mattel hoped that they ahd the next Star Wars with Ray Harryhausen's second trip into Greek Mythology in 1981's "Clash of the Titans" . While the film was a hit at the box office, it somehow didn't carry over to the toy shelves. Mattel released only one wave of figures and cancelled other merchandise based on the film.

The 1981 Catalog highlights what was released and gives us a little taste of what was in store had the toy line taken off:

Aaaaaw maaaan! We were gonna get a playset! Rip off!

I always wanted that Kraken (both as a kid and now!). It's a neat line, and I'm a fan of film, so one day I really have to start collecting these.

Too bad Mattel cancelled their plans cause that playset looks very cool. I don't suppose there are pics of Medusa's lair and the Kraken battlement?

I always though the Krakken looked like Stretch Monster's cousin, especially in toy form.

Cool line, and I loved the movie as a kid.

I always thought Perseus's buddy and the boat man (Cheron, I think) was lousy choices for first wave figures.

I would have replaced them with Burgess and the girl

It really was a pretty crappy line of figures.

Harryhausen himself said he was very displeased with the line.

Theres a remake of this coming out next year, if that goes well, I reckon well see some sinbad films, already I heard on the grapevine, that Pitt, will be in some sinbad flick.

Yeah the toys were cool, just not enough characters, to have a decent adventure.

Since this is Greek mythology I think Cheron makes more sense than Burgess. And you don't have to pay anyone for the likeness

I loved this toy line. I was a big fan of the film when it came out and I eagerly sought out the toys. But I can recall two problems right off the bat-- first, playtime was limited with them because they didn't have enough accessories and playsets and stuff, as compared to the other toy lines I was enjoying at that time (i.e. Star Wars, Buck Rogers, etc.) They should've produced more toys right off the bat and marketed them a bit more aggressively. And that's the other thing....I remember these toys being a bit difficult to find at the stores in my area. In the end, I wound up getting alot of them (like Kraken, Pegasus set, Thallo...) through catalogs like Sears, because they were hard to find on the shelves at TRU and such.

Oh and I should add that every kid I knew, myself included, was majorly bummed when the toys came out and there was no Medusa figure!

I'd say I'm a fan. I designed the frame for this original poster.
