Can anybody tell me were the Maxx FX bodies really just Mego bodies with new heads?

The prototypes were beyond great! Very insprieng for any artist. Can anyone elaborate on The artists comments about Super sculpty changing it's mixture.
Is Super Sculpty the old formula?

Well When mego went belly up in 82 the bodies became public domian.
Remenber they made bodies 5,6,7,8,9 and 12 1/2 for roughtly 10 years so there plenty of molds in hong kong. I have a no brand Jungle fighter that uses a 12 1/2 body.

i don't see any markings on mine (original owner) but it is absolutely the 9 inch body. in fact, my Freddy sacrificed a foot to fix my 9" robin. worked perfect.

To put this in context, the decision to make a talking FK doll was made in an environment when it was common for toy companies to take licenses for pop culture characters and make such product. Ed Grimley (made by Tyco) and Pee Wee Herman (manufactured by Matchbox like FK) were made within the same time period.

In all likelihood, Matchbox took the FK license from New Line, and acquired it across several product categories. Thus, they had the right to use the license for the Maxx Fx line, and chose to exercise it for a talking doll product in order to compete with the other product in the market.

By dint of voice, the talking doll was more high profile than Maxx Fx. But it's highly doubtful that the public would have made any distinction between the talking doll product, and the "Freddy Krueger's only makeup, here's how it's done" product. The "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies were rated R (meaning children under 17 were not allowed to see the movies unless accompanied by an adult), so making any product intended for kids under age 17 (especially in 1989) would have raised an eyebrow.

As a point of comparison, Kenner toys faced a similar (yet different) problem when they took the ALIEN license and produced what some parent groups considered to be an age-inappropriate figure in 1979.

The Maxx Fx line really was ahead of its time. I loved it then (when I bought my set, and hoped for all the sets pictured on the back to be made), and I love it now. But in the context of the parent/kid toy buyers of 1989, I completely understand why this didn't work.

That updated Creature was cool but I disagreed with his statement that the original Creature wasn't scary. I still find the original Creature kinda creepy/scary.
                  Rich
Agreed. The Creature's vaguely human traits made him more disturbing than big teeth and fish eyes ever could.

Freddy in any kid-marketed toyline was pushing it. The character was indeed born of a nun raped by multiple madmen, and in life was a child-molester and killer, and in death, an undead, demonic teen killer. The angle of Maxx dressing as him may have toned things down some, but it seems the final product was missing a lot of the back story that was originally intended for Maxx (him fighting crime in the make-up, etc). Jason probably would have gotten a similar response. I know Drac and Frankie killed in their stories too, but its the arguement of classic literature versus schlock explotationism. Freddy and Jason were still too new and too unfamiliar to get by with it at the time.

I LOVED that Frankenstein monster costume. How cool it would have been to have had that and the carrying case. Just a neat idea. I'm very surprised he has not tried to sell this idea to another toy company. I would think this would be a big hit in today's marketplace. I doubt Matchbox has any rights remaining on this figure.

Freddy bodies also make for COOl replacement bodies for Denys Doctor Who figures.., in case you get one with cracked ankles, like most are. I bought a MIB Freddy a few years back and it's the same body.

When I did all those Logan's Run customs years back, I used $5-10 Maxx Fx dolls I found on Ebay. For a while I had a big bag of the Freddy stuff, I may have given it all to Charlee Flatt...

I happened across the Maxx FX website looking at the designer's absolutely amazing OUTER SPACE MEN section.

Now I find myself wanting to collect the OSM toys... Not that I would, though. Too expensive. :(

I won a Maxx FX at a raffle, and I believe they got it from BIG LOTS. I had no interest whatsoever in Freddy Kruger, but I sure wished the ALIEN one had been released!

Toxic Avenger (1984) R Rated movie with sex and violence which spawned a Marvel comic book, kids cartoon and a line of action figures (The Toxic Crusaders) that looked a LOT like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Robocop (1987) originally given an X Rating, this movie filled with extreme violence ended up not only leading to two sequels, but also two animated kids shows and a live action show. Robocop and the Ultra Police toys were released by Kenner in 1988 and I believe made it to the third wave of figures before being discontinued (there were at least two waves). If you think about it, a toy being released just a year after the first movie would certainly make kids want to see the film.

Blue Thunder (1983) R Rated film with violence, nudity and Roy Scheider seemed to lead to the TV show 'Airwolf' in 1984, but it definitely led to the 11 episode Blue Thunder TV show in 1984 and the release of the Blue Thunder toy helicopter (which kicked ***!) in 1984.

Rambo led to a kids cartoon and toys

Terminator led to the T2 (which was apparently targeted at a kid market) and a toyline.

It's amazing that there wasn't MORE of a stink from parent groups. I guess they were tired after burning all of those Kiss records, took a nap and slept right through it. ...hey Freddy, here's your chance!
Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.

                                Hmmmm....

It's always a tricky thing deciding which monsters would make good toys. Mostly 'cos you're selling more to the parents than the kids. It always seemed weird to me that Freddy got dinged so hard by the concerned citizens, and other things (mentioned above) didn't. I'm thinkin' it was 'cos Freddy was the "big thing" at that time. Hence the Toxic Avenger, and Killer Tomatoes avoiding a lot of flack. (Especially considering the Tomatoes franchaise was based on the SECOND film, which had sex in it, and concerned citizens usually freak at sex a lot more than violence.)
