Star Wars battle with my son

After we went to the toy show on Sunday, I dragged my childhood Darth Vader case to my son's room for an all out space battle. My son hasn't paid much attention to the movies, he's more into the video games so he doesn't quite get it, plus he likes Jar Jar Binks but he's six so I'll let that go.

During the course of play, he started using Boba Fett, so I dug through the case and found mine. His reaction to that was "Your Boba Fett isn't very good Daddy"

It was kind of funny, his articulated, well detailed Fett is indeed full of win but I sent in a bunch of proofs of purchase for mine and I've never gotten over how cool he is. Yet to a child, it's a lame figure, no accounting for taste.....

It took me a second to get it.
You're talking about the small Boba.

You know, even though I never liked the character of Boba, I always thought he was one of Kenner's better looking Star Wars figures.

It is funny how we think children will love to the same degree the figures we did at their age. Your last sentence reminds me of a some what similar story I had when I went to a kaybee toy store.

It was around 1998 shortly after that *******ized Godzilla 98 film was made. A small child was with his mom looking at the Godzilla toys from trendmasters. She held up one toy for which all of us would clearly say "that is Godzilla" (traditional Japanese version). The child then says to his mom

"that's not Godzilla, that one is"

as he points to flippy the wonder iguana

I had to leave the store at that point
"What motivated him to throw a puppy at the Hells Angels is currently unclear,"

Starroid Raiders Dagon wrote "No Dime Store Monster left behind"

Ah, what does he know, he likes Jar Jar.

I loved my Boba when I was a kid, but when I look at him today, I agree with your son, Kenner could have did a little better job on him. Same with the other Star Wars figures, but that's a part of their charm.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think that the functionality of the figures themselves is actually what I gravitate towards, the whole "hyper detailed" thing never did much for me but the younger guys crave it.

            Hey b,

That is great!! You won't have to worry about your kids getting into your lame vintage stuff! They can have all the ultra detailed, removable helmet, tv show themed figures and leave you to your memories. Perhaps a little later on they will grasp your attachment to parts of your childhood as they begin to have some history and memories of their own. Fortunately for them, some of those will be playing space battles with their pop and digging around at toy shows for more cool things.

Besides, you always have the museum to agree with you on how cool it was to get that little white box in the mail.

My daughter has the Artoo and Threepio from the Legacy Collection. Because Artoo makes noises, his head doesn't move. C-3PO on the other hand has so many points of articulation, he sort of flops around like a rag doll. She of course doesn't realize this and has the most fun with them. I though, think the non bending knees and arms were just fine.
              It's all good!

I agree the Star Wars toys that we grew up with were like stick figures as it pertains to detail and especially articulation. I am still proud to have all of mine from my childhood. Their look is what makes them so vintage and worth while to me vs. the newer highly detailed figures. The new figures are in deed nice since they are way more articulated and finer detailed. I just wish they were not so anorexic looking compared to the thicker vintage figures.
Enjoy what you like, and let others enjoy what they like. (C) Azrak 2009

I always thought it was that the overarching coolness of the movie acted as "rose" colored glasses to gloss over their glaring deficiencies... As a kid I knew that my Black Hole and Buck Rogers, not to mention Micronauts, had SW figures beat hands down... However, as soon as I walked into Circus World it was all about SW in a zombie like stupor... I asked for them for every occasion, they were the focus even with all their lacking.
