dont be back on those days anime was a harder sell to western countries,the only things, were Battle of the Planets,Starblazers, and Speedracer.The Shogun Warriors toys I stumbled on them through the Marvel Comics series back in 1978

My sister and I would wake up before school (she high school, me elementary) at 5 am (*program note: we are NOT morning people) to watch "Space Pirate Captain Harlock and the Queen of a 1,000 Years," which is reviled by animation fans to this day for reportedly *******izing the purity of the original with it's english sub, changing character names to things like Dr Fleghm or something.
I just knew it had a Space Pirate exiled from earth who flew around in circles to be a distant father to some girl with an ocarina that like to run through grass. Who needed drugs when you've got that?

Yep, the original incarnation, Mazinger Z was first a manga, then a television anime, then a toy merchandising phenomenon in Japan. This toy is actually the second character in the Mazinger franchise, Great Mazinger (or Mazinga), later followed by the much more obscure God Mazinger, and more recently Mazinkaiser.

Let's not forget Goldrake, which if I'm not mistaken, was aimed primarily at the European market....

what was the cartoon? around here it was Force 5 and they had diferent shows on monday was Danguard Ace, tuesdays it was the 3 ships that formed 3 different Shoguns, Wednesday was the 3 guys in one man fighters, Thursday was Grandizer and Friday was Giaking. not sure of my memory for days, and obviously names.

Mazinger Z was shown here as "Tranzor Z." The "Force Five" series was the brand name for a number of Japanese cartoon translations, put out around 1979/80. Ther ewas Danguard Ace, Grendaizer, Gaiking, Spaceketeers (which was the Venger Robo series from Japan; it's the one with the three ships that make different robots.) and another one that had three kids with weird flying scooter/surfboard thingies.

There were TONS of other ones, msot of which I've seen as VHS releases purchased from closing mom & pop rental places in the 90's.

Like the US ones, Goldrake was another figure that Mattel licensed from Popy's Jumbo Machinder line and released their own version of (in this case for the Eurpean market only, not in the US). But like the other Mattel versions, the original Popy Grandizer is a better looking figure than the Mattel Goldrake. In Japan they even made a huge Spacer spaceship for Grendizer to fit into. It was big enough for a little kid to ride on. That Jumbo Grendizer/Spacer combo would be an incredibly kickass toy to own!
