The Top Ten Coolest Monster Toys of the 1970's

With October 31st a day away, it's prime time to launch another Top Ten List, this time it's (in my humble opinion of course) the top ten coolest Monster Toys of the 1970s.
Being undead seems to be a big boon in the toy world.

Even though the seventies were a far cry from the Monster merchandising boom of the mid sixties (which really was a golden age except for the lack of action figures), it wasn't exactly a drought either.

Classic monsters such as Frankenstein and Godzilla were still flourishing on late night TV and on Saturday morning with shows like "The Monster Squad", "Hilarious House of Frightenstein" and "The Groovie Ghoulies", it was still a great time to be a monster kid. Here are ten of the best reasons to be a monster kid in the 1970's:

Did I miss your favorite? Rest assured that one was #11. [/lie]

I don't want to be one of those "hey, stretch monster should have be number one" guys, but "hey, stretch monster should have been number one". Also, as creepy as Hugo is, I don't consider him a true monster. And I would pick Krusher over Greg-ory.

Great list! I'm by no means a huge Godzilla fan, but when I held one in my hands at an antique store a few years back, I was just compelled to get it for my friend Mitch. He almost cried when I gave it to him, as it was a childhood want he never got. Now that's the acid test of the power of a great toy!

Hugo is disturbing enough to be on the list. He's actually the scariest thing on it, so I get why you included him!

I had the glow Aurora kits. Loved them to death. My grandmother came to visit us once and she stayed in my room. I had to remove the models because they gave her the creeps glowing at night.

Heh, spoken like a stretch collector.

I admit he is super, duper cool but the big G's overall celebrity trumps all.

                    Surrounded by Godzilla lovers. Cool!

I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.....

On the other hand, I feel terrible for never getting hold of the Mattel Godzy. They're so rare over here....

I am not a Godzilla fan. But heck if that Mattel version didn't WOW me when I was a kid. Its the projectile fist that does it for me! I still think its one of the coolest toys ever produced.

Oh yeah, I love the Mattel Godzilla. I got him for Christmas back in '78 and he became one of my favourite toys, I still have him today. I was a Godzilla nut, and us kids outside of Japan were absolutely starved for Godzilla toys, so this toy was a godsend, even if it wasn't very accurate (Popy's similar Jumbosaurus Godzilla was a bit more accurate, plus he roared). And the bonus was that I finally had someone for my 24" Mazinga to fight.

Yep, still have mine too. A little on the dusty side for this shot, but he's all there!
