    Atari Wars

I am a veteran of the video game wars, fought mostly on my schoolyard. I, being of the clan of Atari, waged daily combat against those who had sworn allegiance to George Plimpton and quoted from the Book of Mattel. Mostly about how much superior the Intellivision system really was. I can remember HATING kids who had Intellivision and those damned commercials, I don't know why I took it so personal, I guess it was because I had no defense against "If it's said on TV,it must be true!"

My best friend at the time had Intellivision, and since he was Switzerland we played it all the time, it was a fun system and I liked a lot of the games, there I said it.

As a teen, I had an Atari. As an adult I have an Atari and an Intellivision II, and I still like Atari better (except for playing Pitfall, it's easier on Intellivision!).

I don't know where I spent more time;at Sears or Montgomery Wards playing video games. I liked Colecovision over Atari and Intellivision.

It was Atari for me as well. I remember my dad coming home drunk, wearing his brown polyester suit, with his shirt open and a big medallion on his hairy chest, wanting to challenge me in "Combat" on my "Hatari" as he called it. He also had a hairstyle reminiscent of Larry from the Three Stooges (I am NOT kidding) which was the result of a receded (it was done receding) hairline and a perm that he thought would improve his appearance.

I always destroyed him at every turn. He'd be blowing up left and right, and he'd always say at least 10 times, "Are you sure my controller is plugged in tight?" every time we played. I didn't have the heart to say, "The controller is fine, Dad, you're just drunk."

"I prefer to remain an enigma."

            Hmmmm....

I still have my Atari.... I keep all my old systems. (Although my Genesis has finally burned out and I can't fix it.) The Atari had very playable games. I fired it up a few months back and it took a while to get the swing of it again. The games are a LOT faster than current ones, and I had to switch my thinking back the seeing the shapes on the screen as actual objects.

I think my Atari is somewhere in the attic at my parent's house. Man, how I loved that thing, played countless hours on it

Atari was king at my house but I'll admit to heading to play the in store Intellivision display everytime we went to Sears.

I don't think I even realized Intellivision was a separate system at the time. I remember thinking it was just a brand of games made for Atari (like Activision).

I remember that first New Years Eve after getting the VCS for Christmas; my brother and I played until about 4AM, with no sense of the passage of time at all.

Still have it working to this day. I could use a new set of paddles, though.

I also have Stella, with a USB adapter that allows me to use the actual real joystick or paddles on my PC. Extremely recommended for anyone into these games.

And I have the Flashback2 (still haven’t made the leap to modding it with a cartridge slot, though).

                        Great stuff !

We had the Atari, I never really had any desire for Intellivision. Sure it had slightly better graphics, but Atari had a better selection of games. I do remember wanting a Colecovision though, but never got one. The Atari was it, until I got a Commodore 64 computer a few years later and started getting bootleg games for it.

Never had either one growing up. Dad always said it would ruin the TV screen: burn the image into it. Well, he did pay for the TV. But my cousin had the Atari system. I played it everytime we went to visit.

I also still have my Atari. It has a place of honor in our rec room with stacks of games including Pitfall, Pacman, Pong, Barnstormer and many more. When I first showed it my nieces and nephew, it was met with looks of horror. They feel so sorry that their mom and auntie had to play such primitive video games.
