    Mad Monster Eye Melt?

I'd like to know more about it.

apparently this is a common problem with ALL Mad Monster figures? (Meaning the characters, not EVERY figure produced).

what causes it?, why do the eyes melt?, why JUST the eyes?

I'm assuming it must have something to do with the paint, or the vinyl used to make the heads. I hear a lot of people mention this.

can someone show me pictures of what to look for?

    Good thread...

Not sure how common, none of my recent beater MM suffered from it...

Is it the hard glow plastic reacting with the vinyl head, or with the adhesive used to secure the eyes?

Does it have anything to do with storage conditions?

I have done a lot of research on this and have come to conclusion that it was caused from staring at Elviras cleavage.

Don't have any pics handy but it kind of looks like some plastic is slowly oozing out from between the eyeball and the socket. Not sure what it is from (glue, eyeball?) but it can be CAREFULLY trimmed with something like an X-acto knife to improve the appearance.

so the eyes are a separate piece that is glued inside the head?

No, there's not a separate piece that goes inside the head. The heads are pretty much done just like a regular head PLUS a bit of goop on top of the eye. It kind of looks like a drop of glue from a glue gun. After a while, the goop sometimes looks like it's melting.

Ive never cut one apart but it sure looks like a separate eyeball to me?
                It's just an applied part??

Rich, after reading your post, I went and checked out a couple of my monsters. You may be right. It does look like the eyeballs may be a seperate piece.

Mister Blisterfists, here are some photos for you of the dreaded Monster Eye Melt! Out of all of my monsters, this Wolfman has the worst eye melt. I haven't seen many that are this bad. From the many monsters I've seen and owned, I'd say this Dracula eye is closer to what I've usually found in the way of eye melt.

And one eye without the melt...

The eyes are separate little round pieces of plastic that are inserted inside of hollowed out parts of the head. I know this because when I was a kid, I was curious and dug the eyeballs right out of my poor Mummy's head.

I'm guessing that the melt is caused by the plastic eyeballs reacting with the vinyl heads, but I don't know what triggers it. I have a Wolfman and Frankenstein that I've owned for over 20 years and they both show absolutely no signs of eye melt (so far, crossed fingers!)

thanks for the close ups and the speculation about this phenomena.

definitely looks like the plastic IS melting (and it's not just excess adhesive). Doesn't look too bad on Drac, but I don't think I'd buy that Wolfman for anything CLOSE to regular price.

of course the two I covet most are Drac and the Mummy, so here's hoping that when I finally DO get around to adding them to my collection, that I can find acceptable examples.

Not until years later when I wondered what the hell I was thinking. Oddly enough, I still have that Mummy head (the body fell apart and was lost years ago) and with the empty eye sockets, I think he looks even more scary.

Man, it's wild that I've had these guys for over 10 years and never even noticed that the eyeballs could be separate pieces until last night! Thanks for the verification of the idea!

I would LOVE to see a pic of that head! When this discussion was going on last night, I had considered (for a second) gouging out an eyeball on one of my monsters just to see what it looked like...the thought didn't last long! But I did actually take one of the heads off to see if I could see anything by looking in the hole in the neck (the answer was "no" by the way). Since you've already mutilated yours, I really would like to see the fruits of your misguided labors!

I'll try to get a pic of it. I'll just have to wait until I can borrow a camera (my wife has our camera in Japan right now).
