Mego of the Day: Type 1 Kirk

Wednesday's entry into the Museum Forums Mego of the Day series is the incredibly suave Type 1 version of Captain Kirk, Command of the vinyl Starship Enterprise from the Star Trek line. I'm painfully aware of the in-joke, thankyou. Is this your favourite figure? Did you have it as a kid? See it? Know of it? Is it in your collection now? On your want list? Do we need pictures of it's packaging in the Museum? Have you ever used it in a custom? Have you customized the character? Why wouldn't this make into your collection? Did you make funny caption pictures with it? Post pics, tell stories, say whatever, it's mego of the day.

Did Trek phasers come in green, or did the blue just fade on this one?

The difference between the paler Type 1 heads and the "George Hamilton Collection" Type 2 heads is stunning here.

      Congrats Mike!

When I was a kid, I hated the T1s. Now that I'm older and older, I actually prefer them. There's no mistaking a crisp, slightly bow-legged T1 figure standing on a shelf for a repro.

Lots of us had ST Megos as kids, and the buying order was always Kirk first, Spock second, Klingon, Scotty or McCoy third. You just couldn't have a real ST adventure without the captain.

          I always loved T-1's

Whenever I think of a "Mego" ... I always think of a T-1 body ... no matter who it is.

I had Kirk & Spock when I was about 6, I think, and my little sister was given a McCoy & Uhura so we could play with them all together. I don't think they lasted long, but Uhura's clothes were mixed in my my sister's childhood Barbie clothing up until about 5 or 6 years ago, I think, until she gave them away or something.

I've got a classic T2 Kirk in my small Mego 8" collection from one of Diamond's case scores about 15 years ago or so, kept on display with card blister carefully flapped at the top. In my recent mature (heh!) toy collecting years, he was the ONLY 8" Mego figure I owned until I started hanging out here....

My school buddy had ALL the toys, so I ended up playing with his alot. The figures were great, but the packaging graphics was WAY cool - They all looked like they came out of a James Blish novel.. (wasn't kid-oriented at all like WGSH was..).

Funniest story with the Mego Kirks..? Just a few years back, the first year I took my then-pre-teen niece and nephew to the Kane County antique toy auction near Chicago, my nephew was totally focused on aquiring a Kirk figure. On the way home, as always, they were getting a bit goofy in the car and he kept waiting for us to get next to another car on the freeway, then he'd put Kirk next to the car window and drop his mego pants...?

They thought that was the funniest thing, Kirk mooning with his T2 blue shorts. Lord knows why, but much like the 'fist fighter line', this T2 Kirk had the exclusive fast 'pants-dropping' action.

Ah, for all the lost Mego marketing ideas...!

I didn't have any as a kid, but I do have a Captain Kirk now, (all my Trek guys are T2s). I always thought that Mego nailed it w/ this figure looking just like the Shat. And every time I play w/ these w/ my kids, the voice rings in my head, "Captain's Log, Stardate...."

Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

When I was a kid, I pretty much had all type 1 figures. As a collector, I don't really have a big preference. All my Trek's are t2's, but I did score a t1k a couple years ago and he stands with my Kirk collection along with T2K, original Belly Kirk and redesigned Belly Kirk. Really, you can't have too many Mego Kirks and if you have more than one, a T1K becomes a necessary addition.

I have a weird story about this Kirk, it's the show room piece from Parkdale Novelty. I got a phone call from a guy who occasionally foundold toys while working as a contracter and he said he had some new mego stuff and an interesting story.

Turns out he was working across the street from Parkdale and noticed they had a dumpster outside as they were renovating their showroom. So, on his way home, he jumped in and looked around.

He pulled out a type 1 Cornelius and Zaius and type 1 Kirk and Spock, all perfect (with some rain on them) and a boxed Lizard. SO this beautiful sample Kirk was the product of the greatest "Dumpster Dive" ever.

I never had any Trek figures as a kid but as an adult I've learned to appreciate them, especially Kirk. The likeness is dead on. One of Mego's better figures.

I never had trek as a kid but...

when I was 11 or so we lived in Myrtle Beach, SC on base. I had close friends of course with the next door neighbor being one of them. We played all the time together. I had my few WGSH figures we'd play with but he had a green-headed, yellow-eyed, weird looking figure with web-hands and feet that would usually be the bad guy my heroes would have to defeat. When our tour was up and we had to move again he gave me that figure as a going-away gift to remember him by. For years I never knew who, or what, that figure was. Many years later I'm at an antique show at the mall and I see a dealer with old toys. And sure enough I spot that figure in his case but this time it's carded. Not only do I discover it's name, Neptunian, I discover Mego made him and he is part of the Trek line. That figure sits in my display to this day.

I evenutally found the ST figures at a book store in ATL after I had started collecting Megos as an adult. I think it's one of Megos best lines.

I had a Mego Spock, but I was only 4, and had no idea who he was at first. My dad liked Trek, but he couldn't convince me to watch it until I was 6 or 7. Then I was hooked.

Mego's Kirk is the greatest likeness of the Shat...EVER. Playmates 9" version came close, but this one has more character. It's hard to describe what they got right. Shatner has an incredibly hard face to capture, in 3-D and in drawing as well.

The problem with the Type 1s for me is they have such trouble sitting. It's a problem when you have a Captain's chair...

I'd swear they broke his elastic bands to get him crammed into this shot.

That's my biggest gripe on Type 1s. They just aren't as poseable, although I will admit the splayed leg look works well when you have several standing together.

It sure looks like they just sat the torso onto the pelvis piece in that bottom pic. He looks a bit too "sunk in" to be done otherwise.

Kirk: "SPOCK...I ...seem to have lost my...SPINE!"
Spock: "Fascinating, first my brain, and now your spine, Captain."
                              Uhura: "Welcome to season 3."
