I never had a Mego playset either. And I only had one vehicle, the Batcopter. I had a pretty good imagination though, so I managed to find plenty of places that were good play locations. I didn't need a playset, the world was my playset.
wow...the secret wars doom tower, That's the one "vintage" playset I've ever found at regular retail years after it should have been. It was fun as hell, but looking at it I can't figure out why?
as for what I had as a child, I would go for broke and hit up the clearance section of childrens palace and grab up super cheap playsets....don't know why, i seemed to like the bases more than the figures in most cases.
The funnest one oddly enough was the Bionic Six playset. worked well with most lines, even when you forced 8" scale figures into it you could make it work.
I love the Bionic six playset. I bought one at the Sears Surplus store on Dort Hwy right before it went under.
I had a few playsets... but my "go to" set was the Forbidden Zone. Worked out for almost every scale. Sucking up Star wars figs into the net was awesome, and you can even cram a 12" Joe into the jail!
I had a room in my basement where I kept all my playsets set up... The GI Joe AT headquarters, the mego Hall of Justice, mego Treehouse, Mego Forbidden zone and the big jim airplane thing (which the name escapes me right now). So many happy memories... I guess thats why I have a -on for playsets!

That was a Big Jim Sky Commander!

I had the batmobile and jokermobile and a red, white and blue empire jeep. But other than that, I never had a playset as a kid. I now have the batcave and the enterprise but as a kid, I used my imagination. The stairs were a very nice playset as well as the backyard and any sandbox or hillside I could find. Camping lakes were great as we did quite a bit of camping. Bicycles were pretty cool to drag the Megos and Evil Kneivels from or place somwhere on the bicke to ride along, as well as local small cliffs that we would toss them over and then later retrieve.
I might add that I'm glad there were several collectors of these so former kids like myself who destroyed the ones they had could recoup them in their later years. I loved beating the heck out of those little men.
I guess I did have a playset. It was my own environment. My Alan Virdon and Fonzie are the only original survivors from my childhood (along with my brother's original beat up cowl). I did have beat Flash Gordon and a nakid Robbie Knievel which I traded off for superheros and later replaced with minty versions of each. But the Virdon was my favorite and has several scars on his face showing that he was one loved action figure. (oh, the batmobile survived too but was scratched up with slightly bent axles so I bought a boxed example and sold my old one. My wife asked me if I had any sentiments about it, not really but that Virdon fig is still a cornerstone of the collection even though I'm a huge RCB and friends fan.
the hall of justice playset was teh oen i remember having but we amde our own out of cardboard boxes also my sisters barbie townhouse was a mego figures place.
I was fortunate enough to have had a couple of playsets as a kid. Many thanks to my kind and wonderful parents for that. I had the Apes Treehouse, Apes Fortress and the Star Trek Enterprise. It seems that I can recall playing with them all pretty much equally. It is tough for me just to pick out one as my favorite.
Enjoy what you like, and let others enjoy what they like. (C) Azrak 2009
I had the Enterprise playset but I don't recall if I used it to play with all of my Megos or just the Trek figures. Later I had the Hulk Hideaway playset and that got some fair use for my WGSH. Those were the only Mego playsets that I had that I remember. The only playsets I really coveted were the Wayne Foundation, and a cool stage for my KISS figures!
It's kinda amazing just how many of us never owned a playset, or at best had just one. Why was that, exactly? Was it because of the cost, or was it due to difficulty finding them in stores, etc.? I think in my case, alot of it had to do with lack of availability. I never recall seeing the Hall Of Justice or Batcave in the stores near me, much less the Wayne Foundation. The main reason I got the Enterprise and the Hulk Hideaway was because they were available in the Sears Xmas catalog in the late '70s.
