A few years back I saw this book printing machine on the news. You told it what book you wanted and it printed and bound it then the book slid out this chute. It was designed for low print run books like manufacture on demand.
Is that sort of thing possible?
Or an E-Book? Not the same as holding one in your hands but better than nothing.
    Better late than never.....

Out Konica Bizhub printer did that but only up to a certain number of pages. They may have a bigger machine that does more. We used it for catalogs. It would print fold and staple them together. We did a 5 x 8 which was a standard sheet folded in half. It was pricey but better than having to do multiple prints and then update every time you change a product and throw the extras out every year when the new ones came out.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

Powell's Books, here in Portland, has one of those machines. Such machines are designed for authors and novelists without a publisher, who want standard-sized, text-only (i.e. Black ink, White page) books. WGT! was a large-format, hard-cover, full-color, full-bleed, graphics-heavy dynamo with 1,100 photos. It would snap one of those little print-on-demand jobbies in half. Seriously, given all the bells and the whistles the Super-Heroes book has, there are no feasible (affordable) print-on-demand options.

Not a chance. The reason the book has all those bells and whistles is because that is what I demanded. I always intended this book to be more than just a book. It needed to be visceral… transportive. Every value-add I described above was a publishing deal-breaker for me, a hill I was willing to die on. TwoMorrows came through and delivered on everything. I have nothing against E-books or print-on-demand for text books -- they're fine for what they are -- but neither of them were (or will be in the foreseeable future) acceptable for the reader experience I was attempting to create.

Hope you guys get the book, it's awesome. From a different perspective, it's entirely possible Amazon found some books. My job is handling inventory control for a large wine warehouse. While it's frustrating for me, we do have cases disappear, only to reappear later, sometimes much later. i can only imagine with the amount of stuff Amazon has this happens to them at their warehouses as well.

According to Amazon,I bought my copy back in 2009. Didn't realize I've had it that long.

I guess it's possible that Amazon could have stumbled across some that were never sold. But why does their listing say it ships within 1-3 months? Usually that would be for a book that's on back order, not one that's been long out of print.

Amazon says I ordered my copy in September 2007, holy crap the last 5+ years just flew by!

And yes, Ben is totally right, there's no way this could have been properly done as an e-book or a print on demand kind of deal.

My wife bought this for me two xmas' ago, shortly before copies ran out and jumped in value. I am so grateful. Especially from a wife who never owned toys as a child and stares at me like a quizzical vulcan kirstie alley when I attend to my "dolls". But dang she got me that book!

Had another item that I needed to inquire about at Amazon that was on backorder, so I asked them this :

Me:Are both of those items something that, with enough patience, I'll eventually receive? Or is there a possibility of them never being delivered?
Lesley:Indeed, that is the same case.
You will receive both items Mark. That is an assurance.

I'll be curious if it's a misinformed rep, especially on the book, or if they will eventually deliver...
                      Looking for:

Fairly certain you interacted with a misinformed rep, for two reasons:

                        1) Back when Amazon suddenly started 'offering' the books again, I contacted my publisher. He suggested it might be an Amazon computer glitch, adding, "[Amazon] haven't placed an order with us for more, and we don't have any to send."

                        2) If you look at the book on Amazon now, the prices are back to $175-200 apiece. I think Amazon finally corrected their listing error, even if they have not yet apprised all who pre-ordered.

I'll be curious to learn if anyone experiences otherwise, but it appears this was an unfortunate mix-up by Amazon.

I think you're probably right, so not putting a ton of faith into it- good thing is I'm not out anything for letting the order sit, but I think eventually they cancel orders if they've sat too long
