My sister got a (Silk Screened) Supergirl so we could play together. I just thought she was really lame at the time, compared to my wonderful Superman . I like her much more now and have several...all the gals have grown on me.
Toward the end og my playing with WGSH I got a Batgirl for Christmas. I did feel odd playing with a "doll". If memory serves right Batgirl did not have many adventures.
I never saw the Super Gals on the shelves as a kid, so the option wasn't really there. I honestly believe that I would've gladly bought and played with a Batgirl or Wonder Woman given the chance. I did see them for order in Heroes World catalogs but there was so much other stuff I wanted from there, I never really got around to the girls. But I played with 12" Princess Leia and the Bionic Woman and even had a couple of the female celebrity dolls, so I don't think I'd have had any qualms about buying a Batgirl off the store shelves. The only female WGSH I kinda remember seeing on shelves was Isis, but I wasn't that big of a fan of her show so I passed.
First Super Gal I bought was a carded Batgirl that I found around '87 or '88. I believe she cost me around $17 bucks at the time (When vintage was just vintage and not an investment).
Lest ye be as little children ye shall in no wise enter the kingdom of heaven
I got a Batgirl for my birthday or christmas (they are 2 weeks apart, so I don't remember which) in 1978. It was odd because my paternal grandfather gave her to me, and he was a pretty conservative guy, a Baptist preacher and farmer. I was fascinated by her and remember keeping her to myself and being shy about people seeing me play with her, but she sure looked great on the Batcycle.
Batgirl was the first Mego I spent real money on. I bought a mint one from a Toy Shop dealer in 1992 for $115.00 as a Birthday gift to myself.
I don't think it was deny as much as I don't remember ever seeing them. But I must have. They would have been hard to justify as I don't have any sisters. I do remember seeing a carded Batgirl for the first time after I started to buy megos as an adult. I found here in an old mom and pop toy store in Birmingham. They guy wanted $35 for her so I bought it. She's still in my collection.
sigpic WANTED: Boxed, Carded and Kresge Carded WGSH
I had both Catwoman and Batgirl as a kid, but I don't ever remember seeing them on the shelves, like the WGSH male figures. It never mattered to me that the characters were female, since the superheroes I watched on TV were mixed like "real" life. I probably would have owned them all if I'd been able to find them readily.
I distinctly remember having Batgirl, and probably Catwoman, since I had everything Batman related, and my earliest crushes were on Yvonne Craig and Julie Newmar. I don't remember seeing many others, but Supergirl has that "Gee, I think I might have actually owned her" factor to her. I had so many Megos as a kid, its hard to say exactly which ones I had at times. I never remember having Dinah Mite either, but my brother swears I did. Memory is such a fickle ***** sometimes.
