In my opinion one of the ultimate Proto's would be the Soldier Ape that is on the pacakging of the Ape Stallion Box. I've seen Ant's Proto Ape and it's cool...but the one on the Box is one I would love to have. Some one out there has got to know where the proto stuf has got to be. I know that the printing company for the Supervator set was out here on Long Island...but sadly they have long since packed up shop...I would haved loved to have those early printer proofs/Color Key overlays...Hell, some of the Boxes that were rejected by Mego that ended up on the printing shop floor

One of my ape playset boxes says it was printed in Brooklyn (forgot which one). I've always thought about looking the company up to see if they still exist. I always imagine them say...." Yea, we still have those plates somewhere, how many boxes you want?????

There are a bunch of legitimate prototypes out there that haven't been discussed. Things such as head sculpts, clays and finished figures that hopefully one day, I'll be able to reveal.

I just wrapped an interview that will have a few pictures and reveals a superhero figure that didn't get released. The person in question used to take discarded items home as gifts for his girlfriend, now his wife. Look for it in December.
How exciting...I will be realy looking forward to reading that interview and seeing the pictures. Hmmm I wonder who it could be??? I love how you keep coming up with surprises BrAIn.

One question about Ralph from GAH...being that there are about half a dozen of them out there...wouldn't they also be considered Factory Samples??? Prototype, IMHO, would be a one of a kind exclusive to that stage of development in creating/producing a toy...Like in the Star Wars field: First Shot etc.
I think we lump "prototype" in with factory sample because we have so few and it doesn't mean that the factory sample is always how the item would have turned out. I know the REM from Logan's run is only half done, there are some parts on him that have definitely been kit bashed.

Well, the surprises sort of keep coming at me really, not to sidetrack this thread but December will have a few surprises with three new interviews debuting. I think everyone will enjoy them.

            Protos

I am considering kidnapping Brian and hooking some tin foil hat with electrodes device up to his noggin' in order to extract those images. Brian is kinda big though. Does anyone know if it will still work if I have to take him down with a taser? I want clear images if I'm going to all the trouble.

Most of what I've got is artwork...

Original artist's concept art for Hornetroid, Antron, Repto, Membros, two unproduced aliens and an unproduced playset. File photography of the first models/sculpts of them all (except for one, which wasn't sculpted or modelled) by the contractor that made them for Mego. I've also got file workbench photography of another contractor's mid-phase redesign work on the Hornetroid prototype. You can see some of it in my Flickr account Megomeet photos (member "AcroRay").

Sheet of Mego blueprints for parts of an unproduced Rocket Tubes accessory set. Additional blueprint sheets and concept sketches for other elements are in the private collection of another collector, who also has blueprints for the Rocket Tubes pieces that did make it to retail.

3 Mego internal artist's concept paintings for Micronaut robot NEMESIS - one of the final design and 2 unproduced alternatives. These are airbrushed on masonite board, by Hal Shull (apparently the only remaining Mego stuff he had!).

I've also had - on loan - several other pieces of Micronaut toy concept art - some authenticated and some still unidentified. I've also had one Ken Kelly Micronaut piece on loan to me for a while - a thumbnail for Hornetroid.

The only related physical prototypes I have are non-Mego. I've got resin prototypes for the 3 Micronaut-alien based Lords of Light figures. I have dozens of Palisades Micronaut test shots, samples, proofs and mockups from my time working on the line. I also wound-up with some Microman showroom samples that were used to reference and sell Microman designs to Mego, as well as an unidentified early 70s Henshin Cyborg hardcopy.

Generally, collectors now seem seem to consider "Prototype" to mean any artifact involved in the development of a toy product up to the point before it ships to retail. Concept art, packaging proofs, quality control samples, material swatches, marketing photography, blueprints and technical/manufacturing references are now also considered "prototypes", in addition to the usually accepted physical sculpts, test shots and mockups that more closely represent the final toy. Even molds and tooling - when they surface - might find themselves considered "prototypes".

Digging this back up because I was looking through Ben's book and something caught my eye. There's a price sheet from '76 that lists the Tribble for sale. Not sure if it means anything though.

Hey wasn't there once mention that the characters from Filmation's Ark II made it to the clay stage? Were those heads destroyed, taken home, preserved? Any info if they still exist?

I think it's really cool that since this thread was started the Bill figure has shown up not only once...but twice.

I was wondering: how many factory samples for each figure are usually made?
Those that are shipped to the production team for approval.
                        Any idea?

                        And how about their value?
I'm not talking exclusively of Mego, but also of EMCEs, for example...

Really, what's the unproduced superhero and alternate head sculpt? Did the interview ever end up anywhere?

Just imagine if the original cast of Logan's Run had actually been made into Megos.

                              Michael York????!! I am shocked!

It kinda sucks eggs that no photography was allowed. Now we'll never know what they looked like!!!!

Can't wait for the interviews, but dang! Ten months?!

He posted that on nov 24 of 07. That may have been the lead in to the big month of prototype reveals that were done a ways back.

It used to be linked to on the main page, but I never come here through the front, so I don't know if it's still there.
